anita ferrer asbury park angel
Visionary, Anita Ferrer, the Asbury Park Angel, wields her BC Rich Mockingbird with the panache of a seasoned warrior. She bucks
tradition with her unconventional style, composing & distorting her jazzy/bluesy chords and stretching her four-octaved voice over a canvas of melodic harmonies.
This hybrid Latino, German and Indian has always marched to the beat of a different drum with her non-conformist lifestyle, life perspective & vintage-garb. The fashion designer & Bohemian proclaims that if tradition perpetuates rules that stifle, she'll rechisle more creative ones. Always ahead of the times, she states that way before
Amy Lee belted her operatic high notes with Evanescence, she brought in her classical & folk influences to her first Christian metal band with Chris Durante & the Promise in 1989. Every local svengali producer balked at her insistence to bring her unique essence to the
project, but her influences were always rejected.
Four albums later, taking the helm as creative director of her indie label, Brave Flame Productions & creative director of her latest project, Mod Prophet, Anita is a powerful & confident voice to be reckoned with. Compelling issues that deeply trouble her are addressed on the guitar-driven
& creatively passionate musical presentation. Anita groans about the skyrocking numbers of suicide victims, peer pressure, divorces & prejudice as well as rejoices about the wonders & mystery of romantic love.
The effervescent & multi-versatile, Anita has delighted audiences with her warm persona, girlish candor & humerous between-song banter. She's been on the stage of the renowned Bitter End, where her mentor, Joni Mitchell performed & Kenny's Castaways in Manhattan, as well as appeared at the Saint, Clearwater Jazz/ Blues Festivals & the Stone Pony, all in Asbury Park, NJ. Anita gigged for two years at Starbucks & was a featured
artist at Border's Bookstore. A memorable show was contributing to The Creation of Eve a collaboration of women artists which benefited the rape care program, 180, Turning Lives around, a cause she strongly believes in.
The 1989 magna cum laude graduate of Brookdale College has finally come of age. Combining all her gifts of fashion, graphic art, writing and public speaking, she brings a fresh new vibe to the music industry! Anita brings amazing creativity and talent to the table.
Tell me about your history? How did you get where you are now?
Performing, both in the studio and live at venues has been a joy. I've been blessed playing New Jersey's Clear Water festivals for years, asbury park's jazz festival, starbucks and countless bars, venues and restaraunts at the jersey shore and tri-state area. Though I'd showcased at Manhattan's Bitter End and Kenny's Castaways as well as Bruce Springsteenvilles's "Stone Pony" and The Saint, throwing venue names around has no signifigance on my music career or my passion for outreach. I can truly say that my best gigs were at Northern State Prison where I preached to an audience of inmates who opened the service with acapella hymms. Their singing touched me deeply. I've also sung and prayed a few terminally ill patients into glory at hospitals and nursing homes. I know God was smiling
Have you performed live in front of an audience? Any special memories?
I enjoy pulling out my weird chords, & having guys stare at my fingers while i'm playing, but better yet, compelling my audience to aspire to a greater way of life & experience their God-ordained possibilties! When people take home a new attitude of hope, healing and transformation- then I know i've accomplished my goal!
Your musical influences
I call myself a social activist, visionary & trend setter, where my lyrics & music are inspirational, jazz/avant-garde, folk and pop/rock. joni mitchell, evanescence, ani difranco, mariah carey, jewel, jennifer, knapp & margaret becker are favorites i listen often to. Within one of my albums, expect to be funked, rocked-out with my electric, grooved and jazzed and then soothed by an acoustic guitar ballad.
What equipment do you use?
i play a gorgeous BC Rich Mockingbird with a line6 spider amp and a, my vintage ampeg(gemini II)and of course my rich sounding taylor acoustic guitar. I also have a full PA system, power mackie speakers, 16 channel yamaha mixing board & sure cordless mic.
Anything else?
I'm blessed to share my music to secular and Christian venues alike. Jesus Christ Himself associated with people from all walks of life, especially those who were down-trodden, unpopular and forgotten. Gigs at the Stone Pony The Bitter End and The Saint don't compare to performing at Universal Rehab in Livingston, NJ, the inmates at Northern State Prison and my church at Full Gospel Assemblies of God, Wall Township.
