Tell me about your history? How did you get where you are now?
AM was originally "children of the power chord" in 1997. This band included Jimmy Williams, Will
Szabo, Rob Matson, Josh Staines, Logan Patrick, Ben Krasnick and Clayton Rogers. They were more of
a group of kids who would jam with a few of the others occasionally. In 1998, when they got into middle
school, this would no longer work because some of them wanted to be in a band more than others, or in
Ben's case, parted due to differences in musical interests. Once in middle school, Jimmy Williams, Will
Szabo, Josh Staines and Noah Roston met Matt Brigham who had gone to a different elementary school.
The five then formed AmericanMuffin, which was more of a real, regularly practicing band than previously.
The loss of one of Jimmy's friends helped fuel the writing of these songs.
American Muffin practiced every week and had three or so original songs down well, as well as a
small collection of covers. This was a rather largeband, but it held together fairly well thanks to Jimmy and
Will. This band made a total of $100 and played about 4 gigs total. Thisband might have gotten farther if it
was not for one night in late February '99 when Jimmy Williams, a friend and the band's lead guitarist*
wound up at the police station.
The three were sleeping over Jimmy's house and decided to go on a midnight walk. They walked two
or three miles to a gas station and purchased a candy bar. The attendant was an old woman who thought
that it was too late for three adolescents to be walking around town. The three were unaware, however,
that the gas station attendant had called the police. They walked to a near by pizza store to sit on the steps
and were confronted by a police car. The three ran, and the police car chased after them behind the
building. Realizing that they weren't going to get away, Jimmy walked up to the police officer to see what
she wanted, and the other two followed him. The officer demanded that they get into the car and took
them to the police station, even though no laws were broken. For the record, the back seat of the car was
hanously small and uncomfortable.
After their parents picked them up, the other kid's parents dis-allowed them to be friends with Jimmy
any longer, and the lead guitarist was pulled form the band. Jimmy then realized someone else would have
to fill his role. So Jimmy purchased a half stack and spent a month (the time he was grounded for) playing
guitar, after a little persuasion from Jimmy, Josh took up bass and the band reformed in April of '99 after
the incident.
They tried using the same structure as the previous American Muffin, (five people: two guitarists, one
bassist, one drummer, one vocalist) but things just didn't fit together the way they had before. Along with
the trouble they were already having, the vocalist didn't show up for one of the gigs and was kicked out.
So after a month or two of experimenting, Josh, Jimmy, and Will formed AM, a name derived from
American Muffin, but with the idea that the letters would not mean the same thing, as they wanted to start
fresh with their band. At this point they were much more serious about AM, and music in general. AM
started practicing 9 hours a week and constructed a full set list of original songs in the matter of a few
months. AM began getting gigs monthly and continues to lead the hot Acton music scene.
During december of 1999, AM recorded a demo tape over 3 weeks on a 4 track tape recorder. The
tape, referred to as "The Demo Tape," contained 11 songs, and was later transferred to CD by Zach
Baginski. This CD, without surprise is now called "The Demo CD." Somewhere around 25 of these CDs
were produced and sold. All profits from this CD went to The TJ O'Grady Memorial Skatepark Fund, a
non profit organization which AM supports, in the memory of TJ O'Grady. This CD is still in print, but
only by request. More history to come...
