Alex Barham

I studied classical composition at Carleton University. I then moved to Montreal to study jazz composition with Andrew Homzy and Joe Sullivan. I am currently studying counterpoint in the Baroque style. My plan is to meld classical with jazz harmonies scored for an electronic orchestra.
Tell me about your history? How did you get where you are now?
I began playing guitar at the age of 9. It was the 70's and I wanted to be the next Jimmy Page. I then picked up a book on "Solo Guitar" thinking that I could learn to play like Eddie Van Halen. However, it was a book on classical guitar. I developed an interest in classical guitar. I also developed an interest in classical composition, especially 20th century composers. I desperately wanted to be a classical composer. After moving to Montreal, I studied jazz composition and fell in love with the music. I continue to write to this day.
Have you performed live in front of an audience? Any special memories?
I currently do not play live. However, I am working my chops on the Champan Stick and hope to start doing duo work with my wife, who is a vocalist.
Your musical influences
There are 2 styles of music that influence me - classical music & jazz. My influences in classical are: Igor Stravinsky, Benjamin Britten and Bela Bartok. My influences in jazz are: Sonny Rollins, Miles Davis, Duke Ellington. I also like to listen to newer Canadian jazz talent, especially Michael Occhipinti.
What equipment do you use?
Fender Telecaster with a Traynor tube amplifier. I plan on adding some effects in the near future to shape an interesting sound for the guitar.
