Is this marriage song about rebellion or repentance? You decide. Piano and violin (Christopher Sexton) and Spanish guitar (Jeff Severson), plus fragile/strong vocals give clues.

One Shoe One Shoe

This song captures a turning point between regret and hope for an alcoholic femme fatale and mother. A real string quartet (two violins, a viola, and a cello, all played by Christopher Sexton) leads to a suprise ending.

Alternative Country

Alexandra Lajoux Welcome, Friends! This singer-songwriter and producer writes and recruits as the Spirit moves! For links to my most recent recordings, please visit my label's website, americanclassicrecordings.com (ACR), or look me up on places like itunes.com. ACR has released several albums over the past several years, alternating between original secular songs and classic hymns. Many of the tracks feature yours truly. The first project, My Country (2006), was a singer-songwriter album featuring yours truly. To its glory, it featured guest vocalists Doc McKinsey and Eric Townsend, as well as inspired instrumentals from Andrew Acosta, Jeff Severson, Christopher Sexton, Steve Magnusen, and others. See more details at AlexisMusicStudio.com, dedicated to veterans and active-duty military. Our song "We Thank You" is posted at americasupportsyou.mil. Please visit and express your appreciation for our brave men and women in uniform. The next album released under the ACR label was "Day of Praise," released in April 2007. Guest stars included Wesley Robinson, Noreen Freeman, Angel Sheppard and daughters, Jarvis Smith, Jonathan Hopkins, Kendra Miller, Aaron Bunche, and Emmanuel Jackson. The album features familiar hymns and two originals--"Break the Yoke" by Angela Sheppard and "Holy Spirit" by Alexandra Lajoux. For the rest of 2007 and 2008 your heroine returned to songwriting, releasing two maxi-singles: Texas/Liberty and I Relove You/Je Retaime, featuring songs about my two favorite subjects--my country and my husband! In early 2009, I recorded a rock version of "Danny Boy" as a tribute to a friend. Later in 2009, my direction returned to religious music, singing hymns with singers and musicians from several churches in the greater Washington, D.C. area. In early 2009, we released What a Friend We Have in Jesus (in a new arrangement by Joe Warfield)/He Is Great (original composition), featuring singers from Macedonia Baptist, Arlington, VA; First A.M.E., Alexandria; Woodstream, and Hunter Memorial A.M.E. Featured singers, arrangers, and songwriters included Joe Warfield, Dorothy Thomas, and many others. Next to come that same year was One Day at a Time, Sweet Jesus, with vocals by Rayshun LaMarr, Robin Walker, and (leading track 1) yours truly. This album has been well received around the world. The title track, featuring Lajoux and LaMarr, has received more than 1,000 paid downloads and many more streams from all over the globe! In 2010, a sacred silence reigned. I stopped recording music to spend more time with my sweet mother Stella Swingle Reed, who was battling cancer and other ills with a grace that left me forever astonished at her courage and the goodness of God. In 2011, with my mother's encouragement, I returned to the studio and for the next year, thinking always of her, recorded hymns with the amazing tenor Chris Dennard working with gifted co-producers Jarvis Smith (keybord) and Jeff Severson (guitar). Please look for our 2012 Blessed Assurance tracks on any major music retailer on the web. A final word: Mes Amis, Meine Freunden, Miei Amici, Mis Amigos, if you have suggestions for future recordings, or comments on any here, please drop me a line. (I read French, German, Italian, and Spanish, and can decipher a number of other languages, so if you are too shy to write in English, go ahead and write your own language. I will write back.)
Band/artist history
After decades of studying classical voice and singing in church, I experienced heartbreak through my own foolish choices. (As we Catholics say in the new Mass, through my own faulty, through my own fault, through my own grievous fault--aka maxima culpa.) Friends, I was crying in the morning! Only writing COUNTRY and GOSPEL songs kept the pain at bay. Something or Someone (the Holy Spirit I believe) moved me to record a CD. Now, with my heartache healed, I've broadened my musical horizons. Country music, and my own country, America, will always be nearest and dearest to my heart, but in recent years I've branched out. On this site, please check out my new songs- "Je Retaime" (I Relove You); "Liberty," my song welcoming all immigrants who truly love America; and my new Gospel song "Holy Spirit/Time Coming" featuring Welsey Robinson, plus the classic "Eye on the Sparrow," featuring Wesley with Noreen Freeman. The soloists for Time Coming include Wesley Robinson, Aaron Bunche, Emanual Jackson, and Jonathan Hopkins as well as a community choir with lead singer Angel Sheppard. (Please see more detailed credits at the song.) Listen and be blessed!
Have you performed in front of an audience?
Yes! In 2006, I sang "We Thank You" in a Star Search contest videotaped by Arious Entertainment. In 2008 I performed at the Artists' Showcase at the Old Town Theatre of Alexandria. I have also done a good bit of singing in assisted living communities and at all military holidays where veterans gather. In October 2006, I joined trumpeter Larry Wiseman and guitarist Corey Nitschke in San Diego to pay tribute to soldiers at the first annual convention of the Military Writers Society of America. Larry's wife Susan, The Tribute Lady was there. What an honor it was for all of us to perform our songs in honor of our brave troops. The summer of 2008, I performed in a show called Fables for the Tables in Old Town Alexandria. We performed at the National Theatre on September 29, 2008. I sing at the Writer's Tent at the Vietnam Memorial every Veteran's Day and Memorial Day, if I possibly can. I've joined other singers and poets there on a regular basis since 2007--most recently November 2011.
Your musical influences
My influences range from Bach to Tupak (each great in his own way), and my favorite singers are Yolanda Adams and Dolly Parton. My music and voice, however, is in the country/folk vein: Patsy Cline, Joan Baez, Judi Collins, and Edith Piaf are my vocal role models. The CD Baby folks think I sound like the Native American singer Brooke Medicine Eagle, a singer with soul as deep as earth. Once I was featured on a "Dueling Cowgirls" INVALID against Valerie Lynne, a modern-day Loretta. I'm flattered!
What equipment do you use?
I tried accompanying myself on a KN6000 Panasonic Technics keyboard for a while, but it distracted me from singing. I'm hoping to recruit instrumentalists and vocalists to collaborate with a joint live act. Or maybe I could improve my guitar playing...It's never too late, eh friends?
Anything else?
My songs are human but they are imbued with the hope only the Lord can give. A priest praised them as being "not too preachy." That's true, but at the same time, taken together, the songs testify to the Lord's saving graces (even when His role in a song is silent and invisible).
