Disturbed, but Hopeful
Band/artist history
When Steven Cox met bassist Scotty B. and drummer Enrique Platas, they were an unlikely group to form a band. The singer’s Midwestern gospel roots were far-flung from the bassist’s inner-city groove and the drummer’s Latin experience. But Cox was not fazed. He was looking for top-quality musicians, and their distinctive sounds caught his attention. Likewise, Scotty B. and Platas were intrigued by the music the three formed even in their first sessions. Across the Room was born. The band’s job, says Cox, is “to make people question and to make them feel.” Throughout San Diego, that’s just what Across the Room has done for its rapidly-growing fan base. Says one woman who saw them at ‘Canes: “I feel a connection with this group. They sing the thoughts I wish I could say.” Their songs have been described as "Disturbed, but Hopeful". The songs speak of true life relationships, current political issues, disappointment, and sometimes hope. In the song “Walls”, for example, Cox sings: “I’ve been trying to feel my feeling, to drop the shield and let you come inside. Don’t walk away before the walls fall down. Don’t run away before I find my ground.” In another, Cox sings: “Hold up your protest signs while your brothers give their lives”, speaking obviously of the current military action overseas. In addition to playing top San Diego venues such as Qualcomm Stadium, Canes, The Cannibal Bar, and Hard Rock, the first Saturday of every month, Across the Room showcases other Artists at Café Crema in Pacific Beach, lending some of their stage time to other San Diego up-and-coming artists. The idea is to unite Artists and create a musical community that’s stronger and more enjoyable for both musicians and listeners. Their debut self-titled CD was released in October 03 and has been receiving great reviews. Live shows are booked and on the calendar at this web site. Don’t miss the experience that is Across the Room.
