Biography...
The first of three children Christopher Leroy Rudder was born in Toronto, Canada to parents of Barbadian descent. His emcee name Alleyne (pronounced ahhh-lean) is his mothers maiden name, and he called himself that because of the unconditional love and emotional support she gave him that helped bolster his career in music. The emotional support that encouraged him and the raw musical talent that flows through his veins can be traced down his lineage to Barbados, where his influential, former recording artist Uncle Bunny used to write, produce, record, and press his albums for his local fans.
Christopher (Alleyne) spent some of his early childhood growing up in the Keele and Lawrence part of Toronto; a crime stricken neighborhood known as the jungle. It was in this culturally diverse neighborhood comprised of many people from Caribbean and African descent that Alleyne became influenced by, and grew up listening to an eclectic selection of genres ranging from jazz, blues and rhythm & blues to soul, gospel, reggae, and calypso. He would spend countless hours scrutinizing the covers and artwork of his fathers albums, and studying how the compositions were arranged, written, produced, and recorded.
I used to get my tail busted for going into my pops old records and playing them on his stereo system - Alleyne.
With crime out of control plus the birth of his younger brothers Andrew (Anima) and Mark Anthony (Artefis / Mark Anthony Media), Alleynes parents and grand mother moved every one to uptown Toronto (Thornhill), where he was introduced to other musical genres such as pop, classical, rock, and country.
While in attendance at a drama class at a Catholic High school in Thornhill, Alleyne met Ashley Sherrkaan Manoharan (Steel Halo).
Chris was a natural performer who loved and still loves being the center of attention, he was always involved in any talent show produced by the school whether it was rapping, acting, writing scripts or set design. - Drama teacher.
Sherrkaan and Alleyne quickly became friends through their shared reverence for hip hop and its growing culture, and could soon be caught freestylin on trains, in parks, in stair wells, between classes, after classes and would run around taggin the city.
Sherrkaan eventually introduced Alleyne to his DJ and partner Kevin Kev-Large Hewitt (Steel Halo), as well as a whole bunch of cats from Tobermory (part of Torontos once and notorious Jane & Finch). A gang was formed from a group of teens who called themselves 13 or the Wolfpack, where they got into just about everything including freestylin, playing ball, drugs, crime, girls, clothes, hip hop, R&B, rap, videos, video games, police and rival gangs.
Kev and Alleyne would make beats on the keyboard & put in scratches using Kevs busted mixer and old wooden turntable, then write verses with Sherrkaan and some other members of the crew. Later Kev, Sherrkaan and Alleyne would pay money to have local producers make them beats and record them. After getting tired of paying so-called producers for making garbage beats Alleyne decided to take matters into his own hands and bought his ASR 10. Alleyne would later buy a mixing board, effects unit, 8 track, compressor, an amp and monitors. Limestone Studios was born.
I was working at a grocery store, stocking shelves for $7.50 an hour and at the time payin for the ASR was killin me Alleyne.
The name Limestone held a special meaning to Alleyne, who was an avid reader of Egyptian archeology. Limestone was the building blocks for the pyramids in the Giza plateau, and aside from being a mystery as to how they were constructed they withstood the test of time. Therefore, Limestone Studios was perceived by Alleyne as being the building blocks for hip hop in Canada.
Limestone Studios quickly became the lyceum for dozens of independent rappers, singers and song writers from different areas and different walks of life, who taught, learned, and shared their experiences and ideas with regards to life and music. Limestone Studios inevitably fostered an environment for the development of Alleynes artistic and intellectual inventiveness, lyrical writing and vocal delivery skills as a hip hop artist, as well as mixing and producing skills as a producer/engineer. While Limestone Studios remained open Alleyne was also responsible for finding, developing and working with many fledging, underground artists; thereby putting uptown on the map and dispelling the myth that you had to be from a ghetto to be a good hip hop artist.
Canada does has a lot of talent. Talent ain't enough to make it in this
biz. It's all image man and the audience you want to sell to. Alleyne got a good image, hes honest & adds a personal touch. He doesnt limit himself, hell go where the hell he want with his music and that's ill. - Sherrkaan
Kev & Alleyne did not know it at the time, but they were on their way to becoming two of Torontos finest, most requested and versatile producers, and Alleyne was on his way to becoming one of the greatest emcees to ever grip a microphone in Canada.
In addition to Alleynes solo projects he was also a part of a group called Blacksunz that he and Kev formed, which consisted of local Limestone artists and members of 13. The groups first album was called Solar Eklypse and was produced by Kev and Alleyne. It went on to sell a few hundred copies locally. Despite the slow but progressive success, most of the Blacksunz members were still taken the bus instead of pushing a Benz so they moved on.
Other than Kev and Sherrkaan , one other original member of Blacksunz named Jimmy Temus Mitchell stayed on board. Snagg and Kev became Steel Halo and Alleyne and Temus became, well...Alleyne & Temus.
Alleyne and Temus would later go on to record two albums Dying To Survive - 1998 and Off The Record - 1999. They also recorded tons of singles, some of which never made the albums, but others were recorded for various compilations, performances, etc. Alleyne & Temus performed at many local bars, venues, house parties and charities, sold CDs and got radio play on various radio stations.
While working on Off The Record with Temus and Kev, Alleyne was working on his first official solo album called Nothing Else Matters - 2000. The debut album spewed out hit after hit such as Uptown Anthem, God Bless The Child, Yeah Yo and the title track Nothing Else Matters. Alleyne & Temus recorded more singles including two hits If You Wanna... and Whatcha Wanna Do?, which exclusively appeared on the critically acclaimed Artefis - Alive Compilation.
In 2003 his career came to a sudden halt due to a family illness that tragically changed his life, and transformed him mentally and spiritually. His step daughter was diagnosed with brain cancer and later passed away. Alleyne took two years off from music, making the occasional song. When he returned to the game in 2005, however, he was re-born and began to play with new views, new perspectives, new lyrics and new head knocker beats.
The death of someone close, especially a child, and especially after watching them struggle for awhile, then deteriorate day after day, then pass away before your eyes, in your living room, in a hospital bed can either make you crawl up in a corner and hide from yourself, your feelings and the world or you can let it all out...so i chose to scream, life is to f**king short Alleyne.
Currently at Limestone Studios Alleyne records, engineers, produces and writes for and with indie artists (mainly hip hop & R&B), produces music for tons of media outlets (websites, commercials, TV shows, movies, radio shows), and continues to work on his brothers projects as well as with Temus and Steel Halo.
