Tara was a rock band, started in 1973 in Denver, Colorado. Managed by conga drummer, George Giambalvo, Tara employed organ, flute & saxophone, bass, drums, and the unique finger-picking, semi-hollow body electric guitar stylings of Rick Mapel, to delve into English-inspired progressive rock.
Have you performed in front of an audience?
Tara only did a few live gigs, including an incongruous opening tour slot with blues master BB King in the southern U.S.
Your musical influences
Disparate influences informed Tara's sound: Yes, Genesis, Kiss, Santana, Spirit (they did a cover of "Fresh Garbage"), Crosby Still & Nash, Miles Davis, Allman Brothers, Return To Forever, Bob Dylan, Don Ellis....
What equipment do you use?
Tara was greatly inhibited by lack of funds. Hammond B3 Organ, Gibson guitars, Peavey amps, Ludwig drums, an adequate P.A. and 2-track reel-to-reel teac recording deck. The band never entered a formal recording studio.
