Fred de Meillon started as the front man for a band called Surreal. 2002 - 2009. The band won National Battle of the bands 03 / Played most of the major SA festivals / Airplay on some of the major Radio stations / Played with many great SA bands all over the country but the end of 09 saw the end of Surreal.
2010... the birth of SAILOR MAY.
The music is a mix of rock, indie-rock and alternative. A rock n roll sound that will leave you wanting more. Now is the time!!! "We all were made for something and to not follow your dream is the same as not living. "
Band/artist history
Fred started writing and playing in his first band at the age of 16. A punk band based in Welkom with Yannie Lategan (guitar), Dale Shnettler (drums) and Blakkie Swart (Bass).
At age 19 Fred recorded his first demo recording with the help of Bernard Binns at Chameleon Studios in JHB. After four years of jamming with friends the opportunity to start a band presented itself and Surreal was born.
Fred was the singer, guitarist and songwriter for Surreal who went on to play most of the Major SA festivals, had airtime on some major Radio and some campus stations. The band won the Emerging Sounds Competition in 2003. The band were the opening act for bands like Prime Circle, Springbok NG, Wonderboom and the list goes on Surreal also recorded with Darryl Torr at RP Studios. Surreal were (for the most part): Michael Smith (Guitar) Andries Visser / Wessel Ludick (drums) Kharl Kapp (Bass). The band evolved and went through changes not only in style but in life. The band was formed late in 2002 and played the last show as Surreal in 2009.
The saying goes that if you love something enough you need to be able to give it away. It would seem the one thing I was chasing for years ended up chasing me. After two years of silence I believe its time for a new start and I look forward to amazing times together.
Here we are: SAILOR MAY
"Sailor May is a new start with a new vision and a lot of rock n roll. I know this is the time to take things to the next level.Thank you to all who have stood by my side all the years. And to everyone else, see you soon and keep supporting SA music! Fred de Meillon"
Have you performed in front of an audience?
Love the live life. We love playing well timed shows. Good planning. I had 7 years of bad planning with Surreal so I'm working hard on doing this rite. I don't think any gig is a waiste of time but you have to put the work in.
Your musical influences
Dave Grohl, Martin Smith, Chris Martin....
It's hard to mention names because there are many. I love true, good music. Thats it...
