The Rub (Chicago)

20091129_07edit1 20091129_07edit1
Recorded at our November 29, 2009 session at Griffith Town Tap. Perhaps it's sacrilegious to say, but this one has a definite "Soul Sacrifice" vibe to it. Or not. You be the judge!

Recorded on November 29, 2009 at Griffith Town Tap. These are the final 4 1/2 minutes of the 5th jam. A very big, bombastic ending indeed, courtesy of Marc, Krystal, Clinton, Jeff and Andy.

Recorded on November 29, 2009 at Griffith Town Tap. Starts out as a funky showcase for sax man Kevin Davidson before Angelo Cicco steps in with an absolutely searing solo starting around 2 minutes in.

StarbucksEdit005 StarbucksEdit005
Recorded outdoors at Starbucks in Homewood, IL in July 2008. Very hippie-dance-inducing interplay between Clinton Mason, Allan Bilka, Josh Hanchar and Grant Elliott.

FrancosEdit264 FrancosEdit264
Recorded sometime during our residency at Franco's in Highland, Indiana. This one is kind of like the Allman Brothers in space, which is a pretty good general description of the Rub's basic approach.

From our August 30, 2009 session at Griffith Town Tap. Featuring the guitar interplay of Clinton Mason and Josh Hanchar, and a rare appearance by Andy Dumaresq on bass.

KineticEdit012 KineticEdit012
Recorded on November 21, 2008 at our late night Kinetic Playground session. Opens with a "Third Stone From the Sun" tease before becoming a showcase for Kevin Davidson's killer sax playing. Sound guy adds a cool effect to the horn around 3:20.

Another one recorded behind closed doors, this one using Keith Cantwell's ProTools setup in his basement studio. Groovy sax by T.Mac, great bass line by Pesich.

FrancosEdit287 FrancosEdit287
Another one from Franco's featuring the Rub's take on the classic guitar duel: one atmospheric and ethereal, the other bluesy and aggressive. Yin/yang, if you will, until the whole band locks in together toward the end.

FrancosEdit31 FrancosEdit31
A jam segment recorded at Franco's that showcases the formidable talents of guitarist John Prestipino. This one's kind of all over the place, as Rub jams often are, but the fleet fingers of Johnny P hold it all together throughout.

PrivateEdit049 PrivateEdit049
Recorded at a closed-door session at the Groovatron practice space. Hypnotic bass line, atmospheric electric piano, and the textural mastery you've come to expect from guitarist Clinton Mason.

FrancosEdit56 FrancosEdit56
A jam segment from early in our residency at Franco's that starts off with a pulsating bass line and eventually descends into a weird breakdown reminiscent of the end of Sabbath's "Children of the Grave" before spiraling into almost complete chaos.

Recorded Oct. 25, 2009 at Griffith Town Tap. The final 5:15 of a 25-minute jam. Pretty energetic, considering the length. Just call drummer Andy Dumaresq the Energizer Bunny! And Krystal's keyboards are perfect as always.

KineticEdit008 KineticEdit008
Recorded on November 21, 2008 at Kinetic Playground in Chicago. Got a little funky on this one. Kudos to Kevin Davidson from Land of Atlantis for the killer saxophone playin'!

PrivateEdit038 PrivateEdit038
A weird one from one of our private sessions at the Groovatron practice space. Recorded on, of all days, 4/20, 2008. This segment starts off innocently enough, only to explode into one of our molten, Sabbath-y excursions around the 4-minute mark.

JJKelleysEdit008 JJKelleysEdit008
A mellow, laid-back little jam segment from our session at JJ Kelley's in Lansing, Illinois during the summer of 2008. Featuring one of our better spontaneous syncopations and plenty of tasty lead guitar from Marc Quagliara.

McDunnasEdit016 McDunnasEdit016
A spacey segment recorded at Hoghead McDunna's in the summer of '08. Reminiscent of Zep's "No Quarter," especially the second half, thanks to Chris' tripped out guitar solo and the timbre of the keyboards. Righteous!

If you love saxophone, prepare to be blown away by this jam segment from early in our residency at Franco's (December 17, 2006 to be exact). Tony McCullough just KILLS it on this one, especially starting around the 2-minute mark.

From the second jam of our first session at Griffith Tap on August 30, 2009. Wonderful guitar interplay by Drew Suarez and Nick Ferrer, who works an envelope filter and delay pedal like a '70s blaxploitation master.

From the last jam of the night at Griffith Town Tap on Sept. 27, 2009. Key of D, the dueling guitars of Chris Lathrop and Clinton Mason, the downright nasty bass of Marc Quagliara, the incomparable drumming of Davy "Big" Lubarski ... KILLER!
