Founder Joseph VanBuren answers some questions:
Tell me about your history? How did you get where you are now?
I've been pursuing music as a career since about 2001, so the full story is way too long to get into here. But for the 30+ releases I've been involved with, I wrote and produced most of the music myself. I've also been involved in numerous side projects via internet collab, some of which I still work with to this day. In 2010, I officially set up Sykophunk Productions to not only release my own material but to produce stuff for other artists as well. I've picked up a few gigs with indie film makers & game developers, which got me learning more of the business side of things. Now I'm putting all of my knowledge, resources and experiences together to take my music and company to the next level.
Have you performed live in front of an audience? Any special memories?
I spent about 6 years traveling around, playing live shows for my solo material as joe DOE and also with a few collab projects, including Triple Vision. NY, Cali, the midwest - I love it but it's a rough lifestyle to keep up. These days I spend most of my time in the lab.
Your musical influences
Mike Patton is my #1 influence, because he's the undisputed king of mixing genres and making music that is experimental but irresistable. Others who have had an impact on what I do include Tech N9ne, Marilyn Manson, Switchblade Symphony, Midnight Syndicate, Nine Inch Nails, Danny Elfman, Akira Yamaoka, Olivier Deriviere, Rza, Portishead, Immortal Technique, Twiztid, System of a Down, The Crystal Method, Saul Williams, (hed) PE, Rhyme Asylum, etc.
What equipment do you use?
I just got a MO8 keyboard and it's awesome, so I'm using that a lot. I usually program my beats in FL Studio and record everything into Cubase. I'm stepping my live instrument game up, so I can incorporate guitars and real drums when needed.
Anything else?
I do work as a writer as well - I have two self-published books and I'm currently revising my first screenplay. And I'm designing a video game series. Something's going to pay off eventually, which will fund my other projects. So keep your third eye open. Sykophunk Productions is only getting bigger from here.
