My Long time friend and musical collaborator died last November after a long struggle against cancer. He left behind a sheaf of lyrics and a laptop full of unrelated and mostly incomplete musical noodles. This is my attempt to stitch the two together... I had fun doing it, I hope you enjoy the results.... Martin Stirrup July 2020
Band/artist history
Steve and I were friends for over 50 years, attending then playing at folk clubs around East London in the late 60s / early 70s. For the last 8 or 9 years we have met regularly to play around and record each others songs, producing many CDs... Steve had great ears - I would produce a 'kitchen sink' mix of a song - with everything in it all the time - and he would tell me what to take out when! I miss his input and try to follow his advice.
Have you performed in front of an audience?
It's a long time since either of us played live to a general audience. We would sit around and busk with friends at times but we concentrated on writing, arranging and recording.
Your musical influences
All the usual folkie suspects of the day, but also rock and pop... plus the Bonzos, of course. You need a bit of humour in the mix...
What equipment do you use?
Anything going really - various acoustic and electric guitars, bass, mandolin, ukelele, banjo, sitar - so mostly stringed instruments. The occasional keyboard though I tend to score those, or violins etc. Then a bit of sampling and manipulation. Steve also had live band in a box, and most of his noodles were on that, so it has been used heavily (though not entirely) on Late Collaborations - and rarely 'straight' from the algorithm. I like to play around with what it throws out.
Anything else?
RIP Steve - you are greatly missed
