Not really a band, at this point, but a single multi-instrumentalist who arranges and records to sound like a band. Occasionally I will have guest musicians on my recordings.
Band/artist history
I started out playing piano at age 5; moved to guitar at age 15; advanced to bass at age 17; picked up drums, mandolin, tenor banjo, and alto sax in my 20's, and at 32 I took up the upright bass. I never stopped playing. I've been in several projects: Winding Path, Pieces of 8, The Dry Heaves, Mother Jefferson, Pulling Strings, The Backdoormen, Kavern, The Karyn Oliver Band, and The Beltways. Mainly playing bass in all of them. In the 80's, I started writing and recording
Have you performed in front of an audience?
Occasionally I play live on my own. I like playing live with other musicians on stage with me much more. I have played live with many bands, and last minute stand-ins in the past.
Your musical influences
I don't have a particular influence, but I can say that many genres, styles, experiences, moods, visuals, thoughts, etc. influence me
What equipment do you use?
4-track cassette, 4 and 8 track reel to reels, 8 track MD Data machine, Mackie 1204 and 1604 boards, Alesis Studio 32 board. A wide variety of instruments.
Anything else?
I'm currently the bassist for a Baltimore based band called The Beltways. I enjoy stuff with true blood and guts and not too much production. Over-production takes away the feel of the music. Even if it's electronic, it must have feeling In the old days, when recording technology was not as advanced, people actually relied upon their talent and hard work to get the music right
