Tell me about your history? How did you get where you are now?
Phantom Phonetics, born under the government name Ryan Fernando, is an ambitious young hip hop artist from the small town of Perth in Western Australia. Ryan began writing rhymes and freestyling with friends as a hobby since early days as a teen. The ability to channel his energy into a song and let emotions loose through lyrics kept him in a trance to the culture since he began writing his first lines at thirteen. Never feeling part of the Aussie scene or what everyone else was listening to, Ryan ran against the grain and developed his own unique sound that stood out like a dark horse amongst the music today in his demographic and genre(and music in general for that matter),un-deterred by this standing as a minority and the odds stacked against his favor, staying true to himself, getting the message across and an ear for what sounds good remained the essence of his music rather than doing what others expected. This approach to the craft along with the lessons learned from challenges and experiences in life built the foundation for the Phantom Phonetics perception and inception of versatile songwriting and engineering. Due to his interracial upbringing and an exposure to a multitude of different people from various backgrounds and cultures, the elements of his style are diverse-allowing Phantom to drop on many different subjects and reach to a wide audience with his tracks. Whether it's a catchy club hit, a bass ratling track to ride to, straight hip hop head bangers or reaching out to the hearts of the listeners on a critical issue, Phantom Phonetics can do it all whilst staying to the true essence of hip hop-keeping it real and dropping dope lyrics from the heart. Believing that there are no constraints to ones creativity and self expression-just how much your willing to sacrifice for your cause. Ryan doesn’t believe in having to fit into an image or stereotype or one persons ideal to be considered a ‘rapper’-but staying true to you, technical ability, versatility, determination and an understanding of the art and industry are critical for progression, for as long as there is a driving force behind the talent there’s no need to do what everyone else is or follow what’s mainstream as a means to ‘make it’. Curiosity got Ryan into the studio for the first time at 15 to test his abilities and it was from there that Ryan knew he had found his purpose, along with support from school mates and peers after his first few songs spread helped grow his agenda and fueled the passion. Phantom Phonetics has only progressed since his first time in a vocal booth. It wasn't up until the last year of his schooling that Ryan began to set paces in the game, laying down tracks for his mixtape at a humble local recording studio with money earned from a part time job. The mixtape was never meant to be anything serious, just a showcase of ability-education was the main focus at the time, but as the clock ticked and Ryan developed as an artist and became more and more engrossed and in love with the culture/business, soon his musical aspirations became of priority as well. Since then Ryan has never looked back and is focused on creating music to the best of his ability and putting everything he has into it. Unsure of where he wanted to go with life from there and no real intent on beginning his university course, Ryan decided upon finishing high school that he would pursue his craft of making music as the lead motivator in life and dedicate all his efforts to the endeavor. Coming straight off the completion of his mixtape 'Dangerous Mindz', which has received generally positive feedback from listeners all over the world, Ryan is continually making efforts to strive forth as a rap entrepreneur, already assembling material for another release cooking up in his lab at this very moment. For as long as there are imperfections in his life and the world around him, and the passion for making dope-ass music flows in his veins, Phantom Phonetics will keep ripping mics and bumping music to run with the best in the game and keep with the movement hip hop is taking as of now, lead by the league of low lying independents taking it back to an effort requiring heart and soul from both the artist and the audience.
Have you performed live in front of an audience? Any special memories?
Locally. I'm always up for a gig, rocking the mic is like nothing else and I find people are interested and drawn to my sound as it's so different to everyone else in the Perth scene these days. Rappers are hard to find here down under, it is a minority and a very secluded genre in Australia and I think people shouldn't give up hope on rappers like me because of their idea of the scene and what the majority is doing. I hope to bring back peoples enthusiasm for hip hop in Australia with my mic presence and abilities because I believe people have turned a blind eye to hip hop in Australia and it is too biased to one style. I want to open things up and bring out artists of all styles-it's too monotone now and I believe what I'm doing will help if people give us a chance if more cats step forward.
Your musical influences
I listen to different styles of music all the time so I kind of go through phases which enable me to dabble in new styles and experiment, so it's always changing-allowing me to be versatile. If I had to name a few main ones straight off the top-Rakim, Immortal Technique, Canibus, Bliss N Eso and AOTP.
What equipment do you use?
I'm building a home studio right now-look out for pics soon to come!
Anything else?
You should keep an eye on the music........coz I'm dope ;P ahahhaha
