In The Land of Spirit Totems In The Land of Spirit Totems
Live at the 2014 Winter Solstice Celebration for the venerable Berkeley Times newspaper. Saxophone by Leo Sherman, Klong Yaw Temple Drum by Sondra Slade, Doumbek by Alyssa DeCaro, and Didjeridoo by Melly Mentzel.
OROBOROS is an experimental and improvisational world music fusion ensemble blending together instruments and elements from Indian, Jazz, Klezmer and Middle Eastern music, with World Beat Trance Rhythms from the Silk Road. Like the Serpent that consumes its' own tail, this music is a seamless cycle of Eternal Renewal; just relax and let your mind's eye carry you to exotic realms, or jump in and enjoy the circular journey with delicious down beat Dancing.
We perform Acoustic or plugged in, (we have our own high quality Sound System), whichever best suits the situation. We are available for large venue or house concerts, dance clubs, yoga studios, conscious dance venues, gallery openings, celebrations, parties, rituals, fire circles, conferences, festivals and community gatherings of all kinds.

The Oroboros (the circular Snake with tail in mouth) is an ancient symbol of infinity and wholeness. It depicts the cyclical nature of life: The Beginning & The End meeting in Eternal Renewal. It also represents the reconciliation of Duality into the One & primordial Unity. This Unity is a singularity that existed before any Beginning with such indivisible force that it can not be destroyed.
"To augment the sound waves, Oroboros (clarinet, didge, percussion, plus) performed its
transcendent brand of trance-jazz. I can't imagine any other music so perfect for this occasion."
Todd Kerr, Editor Berkeley Times, 2014 Winter Solstice Celebration
BIOS:
Sondra Slade has studied and performed music her entire life, and for over 25 years she has
devoted herself to studies and practices of Sacred Sound, Eastern and Green Spirituality,
Trance & Shamanic work, Cosmology & Unity Consciousness. She studied New Music with
John Cage, performed with Bill Russo's Rock Opera companies in Chicago & San Francisco,
studied Classical North Indian music with Ali Akbar Khan & Middle Eastern Percussion at the
Center for World Music, where she was launched onto her path of transformation through
Trance Drumming. She has founded a Tantric Trance Chant band, played with a variety of
music ensembles from Acid Rock to Sacred Sound to Spoken Word, & is committed to building Awakened Community through participatory ritual events and performance celebrations. She
taught Sacred Sound, Trance Drumming & Media Intensive Ritual Design at Holy Names College,
the GAIA Institute, and the University of Creation Spirituality/Naropa. She produces and plays
percussion with OROBOROS, produces World Music events, teaches Trance Drumming classes,
writes and leads Rituals, and facilitates Ceremonial Drum Circles in the San Francisco Bay Area.
Leonard Sherman has performed and created music in almost every genre. Clarinet has become one of his favorite instruments due to its small size and large range, but alto sax, melodica & indigenous flute have been instrumental in contributing to the unique sound of Oroboros. He has had a klezmer reggae band, played in a jazz funk band, and plays at numerous parties and events in the Bay Area. Leonard has produced music soundtracks for a World Championship Equestrian competitor & a yoga DVD. In addition to performing and recording, he teaches students a wide range of instruments and specializes in tutoring students with autism.
Melanie Menztel first heard the didgeridoo while visiting her sisters in Maui 12 years ago when she experienced healing and relaxation effects from the sound and vibrations. Since that time she has played didjeridoo in many contexts including private sound healing sessions, The Gorilla Choir & at
the 2014 Art In Nature Festival. Her influences include musicians such as Steven Halpern & mentor Stephen Kent. Video has been her focus for the past 5 years at Berkeley Community Media where her passions come alive when she is able to connect to community through the audio visual experience.
Alyssa DeCaro has performed percussion, vocals, Monkey Chant & even tap dance for
many years with the ground-breaking group Gamelan X. She now has established her
own dynamic system of sound combined with movement called "Body of Sound", which
she teaches in Bay Area workshops and exotic retreats around the world.
