I find myself shored up with no band, no time, no freedom, no leisure and a world of responsibility. My life is no longer my own. My every pleasure is hard-fought and long-awaited. My every liberty resented. To stay positive and keep my creative and technical muscles flexed I decide to record an album with anyone I can get hold of in whatever scraps of spare time I have available, even solo tracks if need be (although I am not much of a musician or a singer).
Band/artist history
I started a free-for-all music collaboration in 2009 as an excercise in studio production to develop my studio skills and to attempt to get family and friends involved with what I like to do. I was also curious to know what my solo album would sound like as songs don't come easily to me and my musical skills are mediocre. In April 2010 I lost all of the recordings I had been working on when a hard drive was damaged. I was able to retrieve scraps of recording data but felt unable to re-hash the fluffier material of the earlier recordings having finally found my voice with the (comparitively) darker material.
Have you performed in front of an audience?
I no longer have the time or the opportunity to play my music live. I very occasionally will play bass for the worship team at my local Vineyard or for some community event. The most special moment so far has been writing and recording a new song with an old bandmate which I will finish mixing and uploading as soon as I get chance.
Your musical influences
New Order, low-life, London, ambitions and failure, bohemianism, dreams, the possibility of desire, the Art of Noise, the Prodigy, Kraftwerk, Royksopp, the Mighty Boosh, the BBC Radiophonic Workshop, Ladytron, Sol Seppy, the Knife
What equipment do you use?
A home-made PC running Cubase and a bunch of good softsynths and free plugins. Also a bass and a 6-string. I have converted a boxy, red-brick garage into a chilled-out creative man-cave/creative refuge for myself.
Anything else?
I am now composing music for a couple of low-budget feature films, as well as working as a sound recordist and editor on a couple of zero-budget films. Gets me out of the studio a bit, and sometimes I get to meet famous film actors.
