Christian Country / Southern Gospel, Singer / Songwriter
Band/artist history
When he was 12, he was the oldest member of a gospel group called, "The Believers", an all child group consisting of his younger brother, David and three other young people from his church. They sang every chance they got around west Tennessee and southwestern Kentucky. They were even featured on Tim Holt's "Young Country" television show in Nashville on what was then WSM-TV channel 4. After his dad was diagnoised with rhuematoid arthritis at the age of 36, the family moved to Florida to see if the warmer weather would help and The Believers broke up. In 1988, he formed the group "Born Again" with the other members of the church band and they sang all around west Tennessee, Kentucky, Missouri, and Arkansas. It was at this time John Paul wrote his first gospel song, "I Can See The Heavens Open", a song about a dying mothers last wish and how her death finally helped bring a defiant son to Jesus. The group sang the song a every concert they had. All the music on THIS SITE are original songs off of John Paul's first album, "I'm Just The Pencil", his testimony to ALL of the songs GOD has BLESSED him with over the years. As John tells everyone, "I'm just the pencil, GOD is the writer." Over the last four years, John Paul has written over 30 gospel songs, recorded his own project of all original songs, started a second project, sang at revivals and special events at churches from Tennessee to Florida. Is a member of the CCMA, SGMA, BMI and regularly attends the National Quartet Convention in Louisville, KY. "I've met a lot of wonderful people in gospel music and developed some great friendships." says John, "I love attending the NQC every year, because it gives me the opportunity to see and fellowship with some great friends that I haven't seen all year." John Paul continues to write and will be singing wherever and whenever GOD LEADS, so stay tuned to this site for up coming concerts. Plus, be sure and check out his grand daughter Amber Nichole's new project, "Let It Go". There are three of John Paul's songs on her CD. One of them, "Don't Send Me Away" is playing all over the world!
Have you performed in front of an audience?
Yes. At churches and other venues where ever I'm asked. I absolutely love it! Anytime the crowd really gets "into" one of my songs.
Your musical influences
Early on, singers like the late great Marty Robbins, Merle Haggart and Elvis Presley. Growing up listening to the Grand Ole Opry every Saturday night and the Gospel Singing Jubilee Program on Sunday morning enjoying groups like The Oak Ridge Boys, The Rambos, The Happy Goodman Family, The Sego Brothers and Naomi and The Chuck Wagon Gang. Then, later on great groups like, The Hinsons, The Hoppers, The Kingsman, The Statler Brothers and many more. All with their on unique styles and harmonies. I was also influenced by so many great songwriters like, Kenny and Ronnie Hinson, Howard and Vestal Goodman, and the one person who I consider to be probably the BEST GOSPEL SONGWRITER of all time, my precious and dear friend, the great Ms. Dottie Rambo. I really miss her.
