Tell me about your history? How did you get where you are now?
Born in Youngstown,Ohio but raised in Cincinnati,Ohio Jay Read discoverd his love for hip-hop in the form of poetry when he was 16. He was told that his poems were too gritty and rhythmic to be just poems so a friend introduced him to rapping. Over the years he has just about perfected his craft. He’s been doing minor shows since before his incarceration in 2002. After being released from Kentucky's D.O.C. in 2006 he moved to Syracuse, NY. and went right back to doing his music. In May of 2007 he dropped his first mixtape: Voice of the Streets Volume 1 which he partially recorded and mixed in his home. During the recording of his first mixtape he was recruited into the super indie label Crime Street Records. In 2008 Jay Read and Crime Street Records created the hip hop group Crime Street G’z and performed several shows including two in Manhattan at Club Rebel. They were also featured on a handful of mixtapes hosted by Microphone Bully before dropping their collective group project entitled Unfinished Business. Unfinished Business along with their hard grind earned them Group of the Year at the Upstate Independent Music Awards in 2008. After a brief stint as a “retired” artist he is ready to make his presence felt once again. Now in 2013 as a solo artist the grind doesn't stop. Several mixtape appearances and a unique style piqued the interest of Live Up Ent. With a new contract...the same hunger and an elevated skill and business knowledge...the rest is history in the making!
