I'm a big proponent of artistic self-sufficiency and autonomy. The compromises one makes with oneself (unlike when you're in a real band...) are more amenable to self-rationalization, and therefore easier to swallow. So - it's just li'l ol' me and my infinitely patient electronic toys: a couple of computers, a bunch of synths and other standalone gear - and a very eclectic arsenal of software tools - mostly freebies from the Internet.Band/artist history
I've been playing with electronic sound-makers for almost 30 years. To begin to call my own stuff 'music' required something else: opening my own mind about what music is, and can be. Listening over the years to some really out-there stuff had that mind-opening effect, to be sure. But it also helped me validate my own efforts: I came to accept that at the peak of my inventive powers I manage to eke out drips'n'drabs of sonic mayhem that stand up to repeated listening, even to my own super-critical self. That, often enough, can be the barest minimum required to keep going... Accolades of others' - that's the icing on the cake that may delight one's palate, but cannot be depended upon as the essential nutrient to keep us alive.Have you performed in front of an audience?No.
Your musical influences
Pretty much everybody (musicians/composers) who in the last 70 or 80 years evolved in their own outlook - and their own practice - to state this about what music is: "Organized sound whose form and structure clearly reflects the creative thought process of its author, possessing sustained emotive quality that stands up to repeated listening", or words to that effect. You wanta names? I'll give ya names: Schoenberg and Stravinsky. Varese and Ligetti. Nono and Maderna. Stockhausen and Boulez. Subotnick and Babbit. Lansky and Machover. And dozens of others who all share the belief that instruments and the technology of sound creation/processing are but a means to express one's creative impulses and to share their emanations with a willing listener - or words to that effect...:-)What equipment do you use?
