Life Converted
Music, for J Cannibal, is the conversion of his life into music. It is musical autobiography, and a message to others. "When you listen to my music your stepping into my shoes and reliving my life," he says. Cannibal's lyrics are marked by profundity and a refusal to shy away from tough issues and ideas. And the music has the right punch to carry such a strong message to listeners everywhere.
Street Poetry
"Street Poetry" is a term easily applied to what Cannibal does. For be it brutal, uncompromising gangster rap or the sheer power of word play and pure ideas, Cannibal is nothing less than a poet. His vocal delivery is mesmerizing, to say the least, and he delves into ideas that are challenging, proving himself braver than some contemporaries. Music is his conversion machine, turning rage into rhyme, destruction into creativity. "Music for me expresses moments that just happened or else it's me letting out my anger through my pen to my page," says the Cannibal.
First Love
The stereotype is that hip-hop artists love the girls, the money, the prestige. But with Cannibal, the love is for the music itself. Rap isn't a means to an end, his way to surround himself with gold and girls. Music is its own means. "Music is my first love and I will never stop loving music." J Cannibal's artistic clarity is evident throughout his canon of music.
The Artist at Work
His love of music has led to a nearly nonstop writing process. "I never stop writing music. It's like someone glued a pen to my hand." J Cannibal's devotion is there to be heard in his songs but a story from his youth also demonstrates his dedication. "I never went to my senior prom. The reason why is that instead of buying my ticket, I got a refund and bought a microphone with a mic stand and pop filter just so I could record in my room at any time." And he hasn't stopped recording since. "I have quite a few projects in the making. I have a CD coming out for free download on myspace which is 'The Southern Vol.1.'" In addition, his debut album, "Eatin Em Alive," will soon storm the streets. J Cannibal is currently working with A&R Select, the hottest indie A&R firm in Hollywood, CA.
The Name
"How did I get my name? Well, I started off as a ghost writer and the definition of a cannibal is someone who eats his own kind. Well, I figured I wrote lyrics that would make artists that use them lyrically eat other artists. Also, I had a very dark poetic rhyme style, so that added one more reason why I should name myself Cannibal."
