Caleb & The Cull started out as the studio side-project of Max Rossell, frontman of the British alt-rock band March.
Initially a handful of ad-hoc recording sessions, the project quickly evolved into a full-blown album, drawing on the darker, more folk-americana acoustic influences that Max couldn't bring to his main band.
Co-produced and engineered by Rob Blundy, who also provided some additional arrangements on many of the tracks, the Caleb sessions were freeform, with a lot of time spent writing in the studio, and Max playing every instrument part so as to avoid bringing other people into the project. The live and often rough feel was complimented by the fact that many of the instruments were new to Max - the more traditional and unusual instrumentation such as double bass, harmonium, vibraphone and even on one track a wooden desk with a few empty cans and some nuts and bolts on it, as it gave just the right percussive rattle to fit the song.
Recorded two or three days at a time over a period of ten weeks, the Caleb sessions marked a completely new creative approach for Max, spending several days writing and recording and then a week or sometimes two away from the studio to regroup or develop new ideas.
Caleb & The Cull's eponymous debut is officially released for digital download on the 15th of April 2009. Expect compact disc release date soon.
