Band/artist history
Welcome to the world of Bratach Bana, a traditional Scottish Folk band based in the North East of Scotland. Our line up is: Sandy Fettes, Andy Ritchie, Scott Thompson, Babs Burnett, John Simpson and most recently Kenny McKenzie . After a hectic 18 months and an increasingly busy band schedule, fellow founding member Eddie Connor has decided to stand down due to work and family commitments from June 08.
In addition to the playing members the band we have an extra man in the person of Gordon Mackay who is responsible for our marketing and promotional activities as well as maintaining and developing our website.
When we were looking for a name, our friend and inspirer Fiona Kennedy suggested the name of one of her father Calum’s most popular songs ‘Bratach Bana’. It instantly took a trick with all of the band members who carried out some research to find out the origins of the name. This is where things get a wee bit complicated
We released our debut album “Shetland Lights†back in July 2007 at the Heugh Hotel in Stonehaven during the Stonehaven Folk Festival. It features a selection of original material including the title track Shetland Lights and The White Horse of Mormond which was adapted from a poem written by local minister Rev. Charles Birnie. There is also a broad mix of material from traditional Scottish songsmiths such as Dick Gaughan and Dougie Maclean.
Have you performed in front of an audience?
Yes Yes and Yes. We've done Celtic connection - was brill !!! Wizard festival - came a close second, then theres Speyfest, Stonehaven folk festival, Montrose folk festival, Local clubs, charity events etc...
Your musical influences
The bands musical influences come from the likes of Dougie MacLean, Dick Gaughen, Old Blind Dogs, Bob Dylan, Silly Wizard and off course our very own Fiona Kennedy.
