Ben Pegley
JJ is an artist who adopts a very eclectic, genre hopping approach to his music.
Combining soft Accoustic guitars and wailing Electric guitars with Ambient Electronics and programmed beats, Joshua treads a line not often pursued.
Inspired as much by the trance rock of Steve Hillage and the electronic textures of vangelis and Jean Michelle Jarre, to the Acoustic brilliance of Gordon Giltrap and Steve Howe, JJ wanted to express this by heavily featuring the guitar within an electronic setting, and crucially, still retaining a true sense of perfomance (as oposed to the mechanical and often 'fake' guitars found in tracks like '9pm till i come' for example.
The music of Joshua Jouet swings wildly from almost completely traditional acoustic guitar, to full on dance floor stompers.
Think that great electronic music cannot survive having a featured guitar?....think again!
Tell me about your history? How did you get where you are now?
I started playing acoustic guitar at age 14 (1985) after having played drums for a while. Got my first electric (Westone Spectrum GT) a year later. Have played in many bands from school days through college and into semi-pro bands later. Most notably the heavy Funk/Rock band TUT TUT and more recently the Jazz/Funk outfit YCB (also here on Soundclick).
I have done many sessions and played on dozens of other artists material (including a couple of Eurovision entries, but don't tell anyone or that'll be the street cred' down the pan!!).
I have spent the last 5 years writing mainly electronic genre music for TV and Film use, so if you watch TV (particularly SKY) you will almost certainly have heard some of my choons.
Have you performed live in front of an audience? Any special memories?
I do (rarely) play live as part of another band (YCB), but i have not ever had the oportunity to play this material live.
Your musical influences
My main influences as a guitarist would be Steve Hillage, David Gilmour and Vai/Satriani, but there are many players that also had an effect: Clapton/Giltrap/Howe/Rabin, they have influenced me in different ways. Sometimes subtle, sometimes pronounced.
I value the speed and accuracy of Steve Vai and Joe Satriani, the same as i value the touch and feel of BB King and Clapton, and i think my playing style reflects a (hopefully) harmonious fusion of the two.
What equipment do you use?
I now use a Dual 2.5 G5 Apple Mac running OSX Panther, and Logic Pro 7
My main guitars are a 1994 Ibanez Jem555BK and a 2002 Ibanez Universe 7 string, along with my trusty Fender Dreadnought accoustic and a cheap bowl back ovation copy.
