Asia LaKay (singer) (production) (live pa)
ASIA LAKAY GRADY BIO Asia Lakay Grady comes from a family of Professional Musicians, Revolutionary Pioneers, and Creative Entrepreneurs. Her Live PA act includes vocals and is described by fans as soul-stirring, crowd-rocking, and jaw-dropping. As an avid fan of a multitude of genres ranging from gospel and reggae, to jazz, hip hop, electronica, and soul, she brings a love and an originality to her collaborations and solo-productions that respects the classics and brings something new.
She was born and raised in Dorchester, Roxbury, and Lynn, Massachusetts, and currently resides in Denver, Colorado. Starting out singing in the church and the school yard, then later in musicals in her hometowns, in her teens, she developed a love for electronic music, poetry and spoken word which resulted in her first press mention in the arts section of the Boston Globe at the age of 19.
After winning a System-5 scholarship to Berklee College of Music, she began collaborating on stage and in the studio with a range of musicians, both locally, and internationally. By the time she completed high school and was mid-way through college, she set a goal of learning how to produce audio independently. This goal quickly turned into a life-changing obsession.
Today, she divides her time between creating audio, performing live, attending local shows, building her digital photography portfolio, doing web design for local businesses, and engaging in social media making new friends and fans, while learning how to master the business side of music.
Since living in Colorado, she has started to make a name for herself, not only because of her musical abilities, but by maintaining an open-mind and being available to collaborate with hip hop, electronic, reggae and rock artists locally and internationally via the web.
Sometimes shy and reserved, she is known as a hard worker and when in front of an audience, all reservations melt away and she gives it 100 percent making new fans at each venue where she is blessed to perform.
Tell me about your history? How did you get where you are now?
I am a Female Music Producer / Funk Singer, born in the early 80's, daughter of a hard-working young immigrant mother and incarcerated but supportive father. Music was important to me as young as the age of 3. Singing in my church choir at 5, on the school playground at 10, after school in Girl groups with my friends as a teen, and on stage at talent shows and with touring productions as a young adult kept me excited about life.
For the future, I see more sounds and live show projects with new friends and my past recording and live show appearance collaborators who include Dis N Dat band, Sistine Criminals, Future Jazz Project, Blood-Orange aka MG [SCARCITYBP], Cathy Cathodic, Timbuk, J Cook, Ottomatic, Kid Hum, Big J Beats (of 1984), Mr. Lingo, DJ Belasco Black, Whygee, Nofrendo, Parvata, and more.
Hi, my name is Asia LaKay Grady, I sing Neo Soul, Jazz, Pop, R&B, Reggae and Funk, sometimes with live players, over House, Hip Hop, Trip Hop, Drum&Bass, Dubstep, & Indie Electro Beats. On Soundclick? Click here for my soundclick member and music page.
Being a dance music producer, my primary program to lay down vocals and create my midi compositions and instrumentals, or mix in others', is Ableton Live. After producing with ProTools, and Garageband, I've found that my experience with Ableton as one that's given me more freedom and flexibility to bring my sound ideas to life and co-create with other artists online.
