Tell me about your history? How did you get where you are now?
Never judge a book by its cover! That is exactly the case when it comes to 19-year old Houston native, Ami Miller. As a matter of fact, her mother is a well-known etiquette and manners teacher and her father was a politican and a professor. THEy never thought their dainty daughter would grow up with such hip-hop dreams. Ami began writing poetry at the age of 9 and at the age of 10, wrote her first rap song. It still didnt occur to her that she was rapping until the 8th grade where she was among the group of kids freestyling and beating on tables everyday at lunch!
"I grew up listening to a variety of music. At home it was r&b, jazz, easy listening, classy stuff if you must. Never any cussin. But I have always rebelled and done the opposite somebody would expect of me", says the petite young adult. "Nobody believed I could rap, I didnt believe it at first. I was experimenting. It was just so natural and easy, though. Writing music intoxicates me! Whether it's rap, r&b, or a rock song! And I do what I do best."
Ami has gone through a series of names like "Lil Red, Amazon, and Amillion." But her teachers always told her to go by Ami Miller because it is famous and was throughout her school years because of her brilliant but quite often "smart-mouth." Each year in high school, Ami entered the talent show, either solo or with another person. Each time receiving high reviews, recognition, praise, and reassurance of what she wanted to do in life. She started her rap career under the label "French Connection",and was later managed by radio personality J-Tweezy, doing nothing more than great music and awesome performances.
This young girl has won countless competitions and contests, collaborated with many artists,and continues to shine under the guidance of Much Power Management. She released "MillerTime" in 2008 and got outstanding digital reviews. She now has ringtones, an extensive youtube.com portfolio, radioplay, and shows lined up. Ami has been featured on various mixtapes, Game 101 dvd's, and magazines including Ozone and HardHitter. She can write, she can arrange, act, rap, perform, and most certainly ENTERTAIN! Her influences include Tupac, Eve, Nas, Common, Outkast,Aaliyah, Missy, T.I., Scarface, UGK, Heather Headley, Lil Kim, Mariah Carey, John Legend, Rick Ross, Toni Braxton, Chamillionaire, to name a few. She also likes spanish music! Don Omar, Ivy queen, Tego Calderon, Shakira, and Daddy Yankee are among her list of "I dont have to know 100% what theyre saying,but I know its good music!"
"People ask me about the competition and other females in the industry. It is oh so sad that girls have to be so catty and feisty off-top, but when it comes to this music, it's really pathetic. Theres enough money to go around. The attitudes and all of a sudden "beef" is just a reflection of their insecurities in their field, lack of who know what, and shame. People that are really making money and excelling in their business have no time for beef. Have a carrot! EVE really got me spittin! Lil Kim, Missy, Trina, Shawna, Angie Martinez and a few others are women I look up to and never down on because they are rare and well-done. Good business, good attitudes, and improving my talent will be my recipe for success."
Believe it or not, she has another dream. She wants to erase the face and stereotype placed on female rappers; emphasizing that it is very important how they carry themselves and how they do business. Little Miss Miller feels this plays a big part in why they don't get the credit and chances they deserve. "I know my etiquette will carry me a long way with this business."
Young, phenomonal, and ready to go! She feels "Ami Miller" will be a household name and she will place her mark in the industry that will never be removed.
