I am Rodric King from Jacksonville, Florida. I was born and immediately became a ward of the state after being separated from my adopted family at 12 years old. Since being released from foster care at 18 years old my life was rough. I've been homeless 65% of my adulthood due to lack of parental guidance. I was an irresponsible young adult and it was difficult surviving on my own. I have two beautiful daughters that I must think about regardless of my competence.
I was forced to become an entrepreneur because of the systems that governed my every move. However, I refused to allow the statistics and the general population to dictate how I would live. Unfortunately, every business I launched failed. Subsequent to these episodes, I felt the need to leave Jacksonville, Florida. I knew something better awaited me outside of the city limits. So, I left Jacksonville, Florida in the rearview mirror, but as a homeless father.
I earned money for food by singing at cars parked at the gas station. I found myself singing at supermarkets, busy downtown street corners, shopping malls, subway trains, and random karaoke bars all over America. I felt I'd be discovered and my life would change. I'd finally be in a position to support my two girls. Despite not being discovered, singing filled me with joy and freedom so I couldn't quit.
