A love of hip hop and a desire to make their own music were the common threads that first brought DMJ and Cris Kenyon together. They first met on MySpace when DMJ (Dark Mark Johnson) contacted Kenyon and expressed an interest in collaborating on a song. They freestyled a bit on the phone and found they liked each other’s style of rapping. Deciding to work together, they met for the first time and both artists came away impressed. DMJ played some of his beats and it was the high-energy “Beat In My Trunk” that instantly caught Kenyon’s attention. “Beat In My Trunk" became the duo’s first lyrical collaboration and the timing could not have been better. A short time later, Johnson was placed on the bill of an all hip-hop show at the popular Chico night spot, Lost on Main. He invited Kenyon to perform the song they had crafted and “Beat In My Trunk” as well as the whole set was an immediate success. In one night, Kenyon and Johnson had gone from a newly formed writing team to an up-and-coming on-stage sensation. Though their writing styles are diverse, wordsmith Kenyon’s complex compositions mesh well with DMJ’s “street-lyrical” phraseology. They are young, full of potential, and have the capability to help put West Coast rap back on the radar. With songs like the “Green Light, Go!” and “Sloppy Seconds” they showcase their ability to have fun while joints such as “Reflections” and “Picture Perfect” show the duo’s more serious side.
