Over the last decade, the music scene in Miami continues to evolve with the ever changing face that is rock music. Many local bands struggle to survive with most meeting a sad and unfortunate demise. During this time, the musical group known as Alukard has managed not only to endure, but flourish in the local music scene as a noteworthy representative for the sound of Miami. Alukard was founded in 1998 by Zaigone and then member Disrupt but weren't active until 2002 when LeveL rejoined the band after a hiatus in Brooklyn, NY. The final members of AlukarD came together throughout the years, including Stephen Varella in 2004, Jason Pupo in 2006, and E. Grizzly in 2008. The idea is to create music on the premises that a genuine, fresh and unique sound portraying the everyday struggle of youth in Miami is not only necessary but long overdue. This combination of musicians fuses a classic punk rock attitude and hip-hop rhyme singing which fills a void in a community known for Reggaeton, Electronic Dance, and Crunk Rap music. Since their start, AlukarD has played over 200 shows throughout the East Coast and have opened for headliners such as Pennywise, Pepper, Canibus, The Ataris, Jeru The Damaja & more. They also founded the company A-Ha! Events, which promotes local indie shows throughout South Florida and recently recieved a national sponsorship by Jagermeister. The band's first studio album is scheduled to be released under Labeless Records in 2009.

Alukard "Everyday Life" is a downright danceable song about smoking all night and drinking all day to cope with stress. This tune from Alukard, a Miami rock and hip-hop quintet that describes itself as "Miami's worst-kept secret," will inspire involuntarily joy—even for those people in the funkiest of moods. Hip Hop? Hard Rock? In 20009? naaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaah… Its was not a dream… Cynic (A-Ha Events) put together a vibin line up for Automatic Slims Hard Rock Thursday night. When you think about hip hop performances Slims isnt the first, second, or third venue that comes to mind, but artists held the room DOWN! The night opened up with Alukard, a Miami band I always hear brought up when I’m in Dade. They’re that crew that people look at you all types of funny when you dont know who they are….and now I know why. Its hard to really put these bois set into words, but the thing that really burned its way into my Dutch Master and krypie graveyard of a memory was the Joe Perry and Steven Tyler-esque chemistry that eGrizzly and Level share. The next act to take the floor was The Cornerstoners. This was also my first time seeing this group live and their set was as mellow as their name implys. Vocalist Lai-Si and emcee Michelangelo complement each other very well over the bands hip hop fusion vibe. I gotta go catch them again at a grimier joint cause all I wanted to do was spark the blunt I had in my pocket while they were on! Other highlights include the gorgeous shot girl shaking her ass off all night slanging them pink shots of something…You gotta holla at Dirt Daniels if you wanna know whats in that bottle lol. There was also the inevitable party of 4 slender white girls celebrating a birthday (woooooo yeah Becka!) by doing their best impression of sexy on the bar….Thankfully a random Ms. Fat Booty, who when asked her name wished to only be refereed as Mizz Thickness, was drunk enough to take insult to this and hopped on the bar to perform the type of gyrations that only a shorty named Mizz Thickness could. All in all the night was striaght as fuck and I’m definatly going back…If not for the dope musicians and shot girls its gonna be the Scandnavian tourists erratic dance moves. Classic! http://psykosouth.com/page/11/

MP3 of the Day: "Everyday Life" by Alukard, playing with the Ataris this Saturday at Sandbar, Kendall By Arielle Castillo in Concert Preview, MP3 of the Day Monday, May. 18 2009 @ 11:05AM alukardphoto.jpg via myspace.com/305rock The guys of the long-grinding Miami quintet Alukard hail from all over the city, but have made it their new mission to bring live rock back to the suburban expanses of Kendall, a couple years after staple venue Kaffe Krystal's demise. "They were known for bringing a lot of emo, screamo, punk rock, and indie bands, and they would pack up the house every Saturday. This was something going on that wasn't covered by everybody, but all the young kids knew about it," says Level, Alukard's singer/guitarist. "All these kids were able to just walk or skate to this place, instead of driving their cars for a million miles." So a few months ago, the guys scoped out a venue similarly situated -- Sandbar, near Miami Dade College's Kendall Campus. Since then on Wednesdays, Alukard's been hosting a well-attended "closed mike" event. But their biggest booking to date will be Saturday's show by the decade-plus-running Indiana pop-punk band the Ataris. That band was set to end its current national tour after its Orlando date on May 22, but Alukard bassist Pupo convinced his longtime friend Kristopher Roe, the Ataris' guitarist and frontman, to hop south. "It's more of a favor, for-fun type thing for them," says Level, "but it's a nice little venue and Kendall's got a good demographic for the crowd the Meanwhile, the guys of Alukard are working on their own full-length album of what they've dubbed "305 rock." "It's a Miami-based sound starting out there, what I would say is the perfect mixture of hip-hop and rock," says Level. "When you listen to hip-hop on the stereo, you'll hear more bass. So when our album is released this summer, you'll notice a lot of low-end frequencies, which was missing in rock music. We also incorporate it in the live show by turning up the bass and drums a lot more." For a taste of that, here's a live recording of the band's song "Everyday Life," which, Level says, despite its catchy chorus is really a criticism of politicians. MP3:Alukard - "Everyday Life (live)" The Ataris, Alukard, Dyslexic Postcards, and the Swingers Chef Club. Saturday, May 23. The Sandbar, 10575 SW 9th Ct., Miami. Doors open at 6 p.m. Admission is $10 in advance, $15 at the door for those over 21, $20 for those 18 to 21.
