Heavy Metal

We aim to lull our listeners into a false sense of security, allowing them to float upon a soft, mysterious melody that soon distils itself into a rather dissonant vibe before exploding into a mass of distortion and feedback. That’s the plan because we don’t want to be dismissed as just another ‘metal’ band or even worse, an ‘emo’ band because all five of us pilgrims have asserted our own unique musical influence and ideas upon this band. It’s like a recipe, gracious and fulfilling when the exact amount of spice and flavour has been added. However, lets just say that in this analogy we got a little bit carried away with spices and poisons and even though it looks accessible and edible, something dark and twisted lies within. Yours truly, Wicked Whilst Sleeping
Band/artist history
Here is a brief introduction into who and why we are who we are: Jamie, Chris and Dan are all high school/college buddies and have known each other for many years now. Their musical interests came together when Chris started to learn guitar way back in 2001. Dan used to have jam sessions with his friends and he played drums, which he taught himself to play. After the collapse of the band he was his own unique one-man band (no he did not have a bass drum attached to his front or a cow bell on his arm for that matter.) Around the same time Jamie was the bassist for the great band that was Gamblor. They were really good and if it wasn't for their musical differences may have proved themselves wrong about their ability to "make it." However Jamie was lost and began to learn guitar more and more. He would occasionally hold jam sessions at his house with many different friends including Chris. When Dan met Yin at a Lost Prophets concert back in 2001 he began to talk about setting up a band with a few of his friends and perform for fun or whatever. Yin plays guitar and bass and has been doing so for a long time (i think around 6 years) and Dan having the drum kit and playing by (with) himself at home thought all we needed was a guitarist and we would be our own "Green Day." Chris was called up and he instantly loved the idea, I think the phrase "Dedication brother" came up a few times. The first jam was held at Dan’s house in a tiny room with the band playing excerpts from Deftones "bored" and Rage Against The Machine riffs. Although the jam was minor and inexperienced the guys clicked. From what started as a small jam session turned out to be a turning point for the band. A name was thought up by Yin and ‘Wing Zero’ was born. Wing zero jammed at Yin's house for a few weeks before expanding their population with a few phone calls. Joel who also used to be the drummer of ‘Gamblor’ agreed to come and give us some support with the drumming and Dan went from crap drummer to crap singer. It was also around this time that we employed Jamie as our second guitarist and ideas were now running as wild as ever. Jamie has most definitely added the metal core to the band and Chris being the more melodic style riff creator that he is has combined the two to form the initial structure of the band's music. Wing zero were working well as a band and although each band mate had school and a job it was still possible to form some free time in order to develop our style. But come late April of 2003 Yin decided to give the band a break for personal time and for exams, which were coming up fast. Joel also decided to give wing zero a break but this was to be a permanent break. The band was in tatters. May 2003 and wing zero were no longer a true force but rather a scattered debris of musical talent. But it was time to lift us from the dirty depths of the ground and re-incarnate some of that old funk da funk which was ‘Wing Zero’. Dan, Chris and Jamie jammed at the greenhouse in Stockport to boost enthusiasm and confidence into the band. A new name was considered as wing zero reminded us of the past what was. Names however are not our speciality and we changed the name of the band too many times. Names such as Don Fury and even The Fury, which were used at a few jam sessions until Chris learnt the name was actually the name of a producer of several professional albums. We left the band naming in the back of our minds and let the music do the talking. June 2003 Yin rings Chris up to ask if he is still the bassist of the band after learning that the remains of wing zero still exist. Chris gladly accepts his offer and we gain a great bassist and a place to jam without paying.... again, but still no drummer. Chris searched far and wide for a drummer and at times we thought we would be ‘sans drums’. Dan filled in to help keep the rhythm of the band alive and gain a structure to work on. Meanwhile, Jamie kept coming up with some amazing riffs that worked so well with Chris's melodic value. It was around the start of June that Chris searched on a musician advertising website for a drummer, finding a very charming lad called Jim Leedham. I feel that the finding of Jim is special because there were only 2 drummers advertised on the site and Jim was local (Bolton) and exceptionally talented. Chris sent him an email and we waited and waited and waited for about a week before a reply, which of course was YES! The band was a band...again. But this time we all clicked like a little family. Jim took his sticks and played drums like no one I have never seen before, with exception to the professionals out there ;) However, after Yin moved to leeds university it became very difficult for him to continue with the band, so he gracefully laid his bass to rest, and we were left to play as a four piece until very recently, when Nick Jelling has been found. Now back together as a five peice, the five rock rings combine to form wws, strong as ever....m/ x
Have you performed in front of an audience?
We have played around the north west, mainly in manchester, though we have three tours this year across the UK. We love playing live its the reason we started a band. Special moments might include drunken perfomances, a john smiths cardboard cut-out fill in bassist, and bourbon biscuits eaten live on stage...
Your musical influences
Glassjaw, Machine Head, Iron Maiden, Funeral for a Friend (and George Michael)
