THE VISIBLE SHIVERS
The Visible Shivers, an original "americana" rock band, was formed in 1990 in Blacksburg, VA. The band released four independent recordings over a ten-year span, beginning in 1990 with "One-Eyed Dog" (a 10-original-song cassette), 1995's "Four Things" (an eight-original-song CD), 1998's "Don't Try This At Home" (a six-original-song CD demo), and, in January 2000, "Little Noises," a 12-original-song CD.
The band consisted of guitarists/vocalists David Simpkins and Lee Worley, plus keyboardist/vocalist Kirsten Worley, drummer Zac Cullop, and bass player Patrick Turner. Former members included Kurt Adam (drums), Carl Estes (bass), and Jason Todd (bass).
Primarily an original band, Visible Shivers also included an eclectic sprinkling of covers in its shows culled from the band members' various influences. The band played both acoustically and electrically, giving listeners a deeper insight into the range and depth of the music. Regular local radio play and several live in-studio radio appearances over the last couple of years, combined with a steady gig schedule, led to the band being voted co-favorite local rock band by the readers of the Roanoke Times in 1999.
The Visible Shivers mailed out a monthly postcard via U.S. Mail as well as a separate electronic newsletter and regular e-mail updates to fans and supporters in the Virginias, the Carolinas, and beyond.
The Visible Shivers' final recording, the "Little Noises" 12-original-song CD, was recorded at Real2Reel Studios in downtown Blacksburg, VA and was produced, engineered, and mixed by R2R's Rick Krajnyak.
Trends and fads aside, the Visible Shivers fashioned a contemporary musical palette from traditional and classic folk, rock, blues, and country elements. Call it Americana. Call it Y'alternative. Call it Roots Rock. Call it whatever you like. The Visible Shivers were playing this kind of music long before it had a name.

Why this name?
An early (and unnamed) version of the band was performing as a three-piece when we were approached by a bar owner to play a gig. Caught off guard when he asked for the band's name, "Visible Shivers" just popped out. It comes from a line in Elvis Costello's "Watching The Detectives."
Do you play live?
We enjoyed playing live as often as possible. We loved it. A special moment was when our name was "up in lights" on the big dot-matrix Roanoke Civic Center marquee. Other special moments were our various appearances through the years at "Steppin' Out," Blacksburg VA's annual August street fair.
If you make it big..?
...it will be an absolute miracle. Since we broke up in June of 2000.
Your influences?
We were on the alternative end of the new alt-country genre, also known as americana, no depression, insurgent country, y'alternative, roots, country & westerberg, etc. A few of our many influences were Bob Dylan, Bruce Springsteen, Uncle Tupelo, the Jayhawks, Patty Griffin, Lucinda Williams, Tom Waits, John Fogerty, Neil Young, Whiskeytown, Elvis Presley, Tom Petty, Son Volt, Wilco, Blue Mountain, Kim Richey, Buddy & Julie Miller, and Emmylou Harris
