BIO
Overview
Antoine Perkins(born August 22, 1982) bka TWAIN, is an emcee and Chairman & CEO of Ill County Records. One of the most talented rappers and creative music minds oif recent years, he has redefined perception of the "underground" rapper.
Best recognized for his self-professed "underground commercial" style which simply means: underground/unsigned artist who doesn't sound like it. An advanced songwriter who can combine flow, lyricism, constructive choruses, melody, voice infection and the like, Twain has also been quoted to say: "I don't write my rhymes down on paper, I write 'em in my head but these days it's not a big deal because everybody does it and brags about it".
Background
He founded Ill County in 2002 with Southwestern Pennsylvania emcee YD, after a brief stint with Joliet, Illinois based Sound Proof Entertainment.
His career got it's start in late 2001 when he recorded his 1st track "Guess Who?" with X-Cel, the producer of the record. Afterwards, he played the record for a friend, who immediately liked it and formed Sound Proof Entertaiment with Twain & X-Cel being the flagship artists.
Albums
The time he spent didn't last long and he left the label due to creative differences combined with him relocating to Minneapolis. There he finished his first album "Finally". It was a solid debut, but it still left a lot to be desired. In retrospect, Twain has said he wishes he could "do that one over" as he has vastly improved ever since skill and technique-wise.
After the first album he decided it was important to start building his brand, Ill County. He geared up to record his sophomore album "Growth & Development" and commissioned his partner YD, he started dabbing in production, to produce half of the LP's 14 tracks. The results were astounding as the album is an arguable classic which featured such memorable songs like "Misunderstood", "Let's Ride" and "Victim of Society".
Late 2005 saw the release of his 3rd album "Buzzworthy". A decidedly more commercial attempt, Twain attributed the album's sound to him "doing new things" such as collaborating extensively and trying for material more light to provide an alternative for "Growth & Development" and the heavier content on that project. The album contained his biggest hit to date "Shake Somethin'" and soldified him as a superstar in hip-hop.
Recent Work
After recording mixtapes with his partner YD, the "What Ya'll Been Waiting For" series which came normally between albums, he decided to branch out and do a solo mixtape. Now we have "The Underground Commercial Mixtape". Shooting to make an epic body of work even for mixtape standards, he wanted it to be like an album but still have that mixtape feel. Standout tracks include "What I've Seen" and "When You See Me"(feat. P-RIDE)
Outside the studio he has live appearances, concert performances and behind the scenes infuence under his belt to show that he encompasses it all artist/executive-wise. He is a sought after executive producer, known to provide direction and bring experience to any project to budding and experienced artists as well. He's been instrumental in the guiding the careers of numerous artists such as League, P-RIDE, King Geoff, Chantel & others. His songwriting prowess is meticulous and his taste is uncanny. Combine it all with his image which defines "flava & style".
