Why this name?
Theta Naught is a term used by scientists and engineers. Theta is a greek letter, and is used as a variable for "angle" measurement. Naught is simply "nothing." When the greek letter Theta is given a subscript of zero, it can be read as "theta naught," and is used in reference to an initial or starting angle (ie. the initial angle of a trajectory launch). A few members of the band study the sciences and engineering at a collegiate level, and so it was introduced.
Do you play live?
We love playing live, or just practicing in a basement. The metaphysical magic that occurs when improvising music with one another in indescribeable. Every show, every performance, every contemplative session, and every discussion is special.
How, do you think, does the internet (or mp3) change the music industry?
easy access to the people. the retail music industry is insanely over-priced. check out musicians online, and if you like what you hear then support them for a reasonable price...not highway robbery.
Would you sign a record contract with a major label?
No.
Band History:
Theta Naught is a purely instrumental, improvisational group of friends/musicians that formed in Salt Lake City, Utah near the end of 2002. Taylor and Ryan became acquainted with each other while Ryan was playing in a band called I Fight Girls in 1999. The two of them started playing music together on an occasional basis near the end of the world (Y2K). They played around with different sounds, structures, amplification methods, mathematical equations, computer processors, and such, and finally recognized that their best music and sounds would generate at the time of origination. After playing with several other musicians, they brought in Oliver (the Snails, La Nuit) to fill in during a Christmas tour in December 2002. Since that time Peter was brought in as the full-time cellist. And Jared Stanfield as full-time keys.
Currently, all five members of Theta Naught are pursuing their goals of higher education at the University of Utah in Salt Lake City. Darren Corey is finishing a Bachelor of Science in Computer Engineering; Taylor is working on Bachelor of Science in Architecture; Ryan is pursuing a Master of Science in Mechanical Engineering; Peter is continuing with a Bachelor of Arts in Romantic Languages; Jared is pursuing a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science and a Bachelor of Arts in Economics. They all find themselves easily entertained with math jokes, deep conversations regarding the fourth dimension, quoting all genres of movies, and tying knots. They all enjoy continuing their education, are international travelers, and speak several foreign languages fluently.
