The Creator is simply me and everything around me at a given time that helps me create. Originally started as my Dj sound 156 studios, but after the passing of my music partner/ cousin i felt the change was needed. My purpose is find that sound that will invoke emotion...make you want to dance, make you want to laugh...just raw emotion. Forget the buzz, forget the money...Thats all nice, but its all about the love of music, and creating TIMELESS....Note I say TIMELESS...hits that can be added to the repertoire of amazing music we all listen to and love from then and now. The Creator is meant to create...destined to create...and that's just what it will do.
Why this name?
Well, My birthname is Mut'aal Al' Khaaliq Zakee Green. It is of Islamic origin meaning "Supreme Creator." So it was basically that easy. There was no reason to come up with some cheesy, head-scratching name for myself. Because its just me. I have the attribute of the original man. So I have no choice but to keep it original.
Do you play live?
Yes I do play live. haha. Almost everyday when school is in session. I go to the University of Miami and I play in the Studio Jazz Band and the Salsa ensemble. To me, I see this as the opportunity of a lifetime. I have the pleasure to play with some of the best musicians in the US and in some instances in the world. One memorable moment was seeing Slide Hampton (Trombone player) play with the CJB my sophomore year. As I am a trombone player myself, it was the greatest experience ever. And of course everytime I step on stage to perform. Ive been playing since I was in middle school, and every time still feels like the first time.
How, do you think, does the internet (or mp3) change the music industry?
Yeh, it definately does change the music industry. Its killing majors and helping indies. But its a move that was inevitable to happen. As times change [technology] you have no choice but to change with it, and I don't think the music industry was ready for it all back in the days once napster hit the scene. But the internet is a great thing at the same time. Now with myspace music, sound click, and others like facebook, anybody can get themselves heard.
Would you sign a record contract with a major label?
Nah, Im good with that haha. Of course unless they came with a good proposal and wouldn't try to change what I do.
Band History:
I started out like most [good] producers as a DJ, so I know what sounds good, whats going to make the people move a certain way , and make them want to hear more. Just to jump back, a past girlfriend of mine was the niece of one of the biggest DJ sounds in Jamaica and all over the world Black Chiney. They are also one of the biggest remixing and dubplate sounds along with Tony Matterhorn and Mighty Crown, but anyways. Being around them, I learn how to remix, so my cousin John "Da Grizz" Thomas R.I.P and I started our own Dj sound that we called 156 Studios. We did our thing we put out two mixtapes, had some guest artists on the second mixtape, so I started off more so in the dancehall world. After the passing of John, I knew the change was right..and here we are today...The Creator. And the history is in the making from now on basically.
Your influences?
My major musical influences are Pete Rock, RZA, Prince Paul, of course the father of sampling DJ Marley Marl, Just Blaze, K. West, Madlib, J.Dilla R.I.P. , and the list goes on and on. I mean I have been playing music since I was 3 years old. So naturally anything I hear is an influence. Whether its Symphony Fantastique from Belioz or Donuts from Dilla R.I.P., I get influenced and inspired. As for what sounds im into, again its everything. Whatever I am hearing at the moment is what im into. At this point I am just trying to find a sound for myself and make music you know.
Favorite spot?
NY my home of course, and Miami.
Equipment used:
Im using the MPC 2000XL right now. I also have the Denon dns-1000 DJ set-up and the Gemini direct drive TT.
Anything else...?
Support the efforts in anyway you can. I not me then somebody.
