Standby are a 4-piece rock band from Glasgow. The band has developed a solid, melodic rock sound, which at times is full on and others, quite mellow and spacey.
Standby's members are four refreshingly different individuals, in their musical tastes, influences and playing styles giving them the ability to create songs that are at times hard to categorize but always enjoyable.
StandbY are;
Gerry Fitzimmons - Lead Singer and Guitarist
Bobby Currie - Lead Guitarist and Vocals
Will Welch - Drums
Mark Connelly - Bass and Vocals
Band/artist history
Standby formed officially around August 2002, although they have been "jamming" together for around two years.
The original three met at Stow College in Glasgow where they studied Music Technology together. StandbY was created by Gerry, Bobby and Stef (no longer a member)and only became 4 in Jan 2003 after our search for a drummer ended and Mark joined up!
Stef and Mark then left the band....after a few line up changes we got Gerrys old school mate Will in on drums and after experimenting unsuccessully with Bobby's younger brother (left to join metal band Messiah Torn) amongst others Mark eventually returned but this time as the new bass guy!
Here is a short bio on each member;
Bobby - Primary song writer. Driving force behind the project. Guitars, random noises and the odd backing vocal. All music to date recorded in his bedroom mini studio, the exclusive "La Maison Dazzle" verging on the pre-historic clocking in at 25 years old!!!
Influences - Chris Cornell, Pearl Jam, Alice in Chains, Jeff Buckley, Year of the Rabbit and Soundgarden
Favourite Album - Superunknown by Soundgarden
Gerrard "Fitzy" Fitsimmons - Our enigmatic Vocalist and Rhythm guitarist, from Cumbernauld (outside Glasgow). Music Prize winning Secondary school student! Has started writing for the band, and his 1st track "Stand in Line" is a very popular part of our new set list.
Influences - Swing / Big Band, U2, Eddie Vedder, Jonny Cash and Chris Cornell
Favourite Album - Ten by Pearl Jam
Mark Connelly - Bass man! Arguably the most musically talented person any of us have ever had the pleasure of meeting! Mark is also involved in Glasgow based metal act "Syth" who can be seen tearing it up in the pubs and clubs in and around Glasgow (occasionally with instruments)
Influences - Metallica, Crowded House (the guy is diverse!) and any cheesy 80's music you can find!!!
Favourite Album - Woodface by Crowded House
Will Welch- Drummer, No longer just the fresh faced newcomer, has made his mark on the band and is here to stay! Fantastic drummer, energetic and enthusiactic by nature. Will one day own the largest drumkit ever!!
Influences include U2 and the Police amongst many others...member of prize winning school band 3 years in a row as a teenager!!! (gasp and drool)
Have you performed in front of an audience?
Yeah. We play around Glasgow.
Highlight so far has been the Strathclyde Union on the 18th Feb this year...great venue, huge!!
Your musical influences
Our influences vary, but you can hear Foo fighters, Pearl Jam, Audioslave, Soundgarden and Failure in our material as well as some more middle of the road pop rock like Stereophonics and U2.
