Sharrhan has been performing her original and unique electronic flute 'looping' improvisations for over 20 years. The music crosses a few genres-- new age, electronica, trance, world, experimental, jazz, folk-- to name a few-- and when people first hear one of Sharrhan's CDs they assume they're hearing flutes accompanied by an electronic orchestra. But it's just her flute, one or two digital delays, and sometimes her voice.
Why this name?
I'm a solo artist, so I use my first name.
Do you play live?
I've played weddings, special events, Arts Council gigs, conventions. . . but my best gigs have always been in the subways and streets of Cambridge and Boston. The people are wonderful and the special moments are too numerous to mention.
How, do you think, does the internet (or mp3) change the music industry?
Putting the power directly in the hands of the artists is a GOOD thing.
Would you sign a record contract with a major label?
Years ago I would have said yes, but now I'd have to really take a good look at who wanted to sign me.
Band History:
I perflromed with the Tucson Symphony and I've played with every type of musical group imaginable-- from outside jazz to blues, folk and rock groups. But my heart is in the music of the inner spaces, for its subtle power to open consciousness to healing and the timeless Luminous Void.
Your influences?
Again, pretty ecclectic and numerous -- Deuter, Eno-Fripp, Vangelis, Enya, Vollenweider, Roach, Halpern. . . Pink Floyd, Santana. Indian and Arabic classical, Irish folk, Native American, Chinese folk. . . the list is endless.
Favorite spot?
The bow or stern of the boat en route to the island I camp out on every summer-- staring intently into the waves. Time stops, and it's incredibly peaceful.
Equipment used:
Other than my C flute, alto flute and voice, of late I've been using a 1 second and 8 second digital delay and a reverb. On "Voices from the Dreamtime" I'm accompanied by Jonathan Backstrom on electronic keyboard that's altered by digital delays. I'm looking to add some of my own keyboard work soon, perhaps in my next CD effort.
