NEWS
A new intervierw that Jay did with Tennesee's "The Metal Show" has been posted in the media section. Thanks again to Chris for making it happen.
After the Straight Line Stitch interview late last month I began to notice a need for alot more depth in the 'views. It's just fair to everyone and especially to the bands!
With that in mind, I approached our next interview. I've had some 'here and there' contact with Jay of Senate since last year and he was willing to be my first target! Jay had a wealth of knowledge to share with us about the band, the Canadian metal scene, their release 'The Great Northern Scenekill', and just what it all means! We hope you'll enjoy it! -Chris
TMS: You've received great reviews from Metal Maniacs, Exlaim!, Blabbermouth, and many others and especially toward the quality of production on your debut. In fact, it's also been labeled as 'as the third best independent album of 2007'. What can you tell us about the direction of your late 2006 release 'The Great Northern Scenekill' and what metal fans who have not yet heard it can expect? Of note, there was a false sense of security in the Intro before my ears were kicked in by...

Matt did an interview with Stephen Becker of Germany's metal/goth webzine Obliveon.de. For those of you who can't read German I've posted the english transcript in the media section.
Happy 2008 To All!!
Just wanted to give you guys an update on what's going on in the Senate camp...Pat returned from a 2 month run with Despised Icon filling in for Alex on the drums, and we managed to squeeze in a show with Beneath The Massacre a couple days afterwards. The main business however is that we've been writing and demo-ing tunes for our next record! We're nearly half a dozen tunes in, and we have lots more ideas that just need to be arranged and recorded and I would say that things are progressing very well.
As far as the tunes go they are all quite different from each other, and quite different from the Scenekill record. Some are longer and more technical, a couple are shorter and more aggressive and a couple ideas are coming out very melodic, so it looks like its gonna be a much more diverse and interesting outing this time.
Some of the new titles are:
Everyone's a Christian On Their Deathbed
Sympathy For The Insects
The Whore
Vices
Speak Through Me
We're aiming to do some in studio preproduction in late March/Early April so you'll get a chance to hear some new ideas around then.
Anyways take care all and we'll see you soon!

A new review from Deathdoom Productions (UK)
SENATE
"The Great Northern Scenekill"
Although nothing original, Senate do appeal instantly. Their album, a Canadian spin on Pantera's "The Great Southern Trendkill" might sucker you into believing this is a rip off, mimicking the former sludge masters but actually nothing could be farther from the truth. Senate pack a real punch with their modern Deathcore style which motors along at a constantly fast pace, with some interesting solo's thrown in for good measure. Similar in style and sound to Englishmen Gutworm, but laced with some more European style influences, "The Great Northern Scenekill" will raise pulses and turn heads!!

5. Ledyard - Demo 2007

Senate
The Great Northern Scenekill
It is a rare feat for a band to release a record that sounds this good, not only musically but especially production-wise, without the connections and cash that come with signing to a label. With members from Threat Signal and Martyr, and hailing from both Ontario and Quebec, the hidden gem that is The Great Northern Scenekill offers an invigorating twist in the ever-eclectic Canadian underground. Senate draw influence from the European melody meets thrash stylising of bands like Darkane but incorporate a distinct North American edge along the lines of the Black Dahlia Murder, without the pseudo-black metal and tendency towards generics. Though some songs are needlessly long, the repetition isn't mind numbing simply because it offers you another chance to absorb the awesome. Having already attracted a decent amount of hype from Canadian metal magazines, as well as a good deal of attention on their myspace page, it's only a matter of time before they take their place alongside Canada's other world class metal acts. (Independent)
Our album is now available through CDBaby.net http://cdbaby.com/cd/senatethrash as well as being featured starting tomorrow (Nov 13, 2007) in two areas of their website.

Genre-bending in the Canadian post-death fashion is the name of the game for this outfit, as the relentless debut full length implies. They've had all kinds of professional producers and studio guys to help 'em attain the perfection they desired, but even if this one bore a more unprofessional sound, the songs speak for themselves. Lifting the Swedish thrash template of At The Gates and Carnal Forge-style speed attacks and cyber-tech pummeling techniques a la Meshuggah, Strapping Young Lad and Textures are intertwined to create a crushing, high-octane, pit-monger of a release. Could fit well on a death metal tour, metalcore festival or anything in between. I suspect bigger things are in the works... - Dave Brenner, Firing Squad column, Metal Maniacs, Sept 2007 issue

We're Senate a melodic thrash band from Canada, we're back in 2007 with a new bass player, album and many new shows. Check our website for all the details.

www.senatemetal.com

Why this name?
Senate has been a name our singer Matt has had for a long time. So it was natural to call his new project that exact name.
Do you play live?
We play live from Hamilton to Quebec, we've done a 5 day Ontario (Canada) mini tour with Martyr and opened for such acts as:
Despiced Icon, Krisiun, Belphegor, Cephalic Carnage, Kataklysm, Goatwhore, Diecast, Threat Signal, Anvil, Neuraxis, Misery Index, BloodShotEye and Thine Eyes Bleed to name a few.
Despiced Icon, Krisiun, Belphegor, Cephalic Carnage, Kataklysm, Goatwhore, Diecast, Threat Signal, Anvil, Neuraxis, Misery Index, BloodShotEye and Thine Eyes Bleed to name a few.
How, do you think, does the internet (or mp3) change the music industry?
It has changed the music industry greatly as people are now able to preview and show off there music, without having to spend big money on marketing and recording.
Would you sign a record contract with a major label?
Yes, that would be great.
Band History:
SENATE is the newest dominant force in Canadian Metal.
Alongside such young, talented heavyweights as Despised Icon, Beneath The Massacre and Protest The Hero, SENATE are part of a suddenly thriving Canadian
metal scene ready to take the torch from legendary acts such as Cryptopsy and Kataklysm and carry it into the future on a global scale.
SENATE combine elements of Thrash, Black Metal, and Melodic Metal to forge an ultra-aggressive, hook- laden style of their own.
SENATE is comprised of five members: Matt Di Franco (Vocals), Jay Siebert (Lead Guitar), Jay Hudson (Rhythm Guitar), Keith Gillam (Bass) and Patrice Hamelin (Drums).
Patrice Hamelin is also a member of legendary Quebecois tech metal band Martyr.
SENATE's roots date back to 2003, but the band really became the complete unit it is today with the addition of Patrice as a permanent member in the summer of 2006.
On Dec 17 2006, SENATE independently released its full length debut album 'The Great Northern Scenekill'. The (self-financed) record was recorded at Silo Studio in Hamilton, ON with Producer Julius "Juice" Butty (Alexisonfire, Protest The Hero, Cancer Bats).
The album was mastered at Antfarm Studios in Denmark by Tue Madsen (Rob Halford, Lamb Of God, The Haunted).
The album contains eight sonic slabs of masterfully executed metal. Each track reveals the band's high level of depth, maturity and dedication to their craft, elements not typically associated with young bands on a debut record.
No quantizing or sound replacement was used in the creation of 'The Great Northern Scenekill'.
Senate has been featured in 'Metal Maniacs', 'Unrestrained!', and 'Brave Words and Bloody Knuckles' magazine, and has received generous amounts of airplay on several internet radio stations across North America.
