Welcome! Thanks for taking a moment to view my profile & listening to the music, if you do...
I hope you'll find it interesting.
Music is a funny thing, yes? Every living thing on this planet responds to and recognizes tone & melody. There are few things in life that are so universal.
I find it fascinating that something so seemingly simple can unify a nation, embed a memory that lasts a lifetime, and bring a strength that can inspire us through the most trying of experiences.
Second only to love & life itself, music, however you hear it, is a gift that should not be analyzed but instead freely given, freely received, & cherished for simply what it is.
Life is experienced through so many different perspectives & most of the pieces I write are, in one way or another, a representation of my experiences or those of friends. To that end, I would like to invite you to send me your stories, as they are often my muse.
Russ is a composer & producer who, for more than a decade,
has succeeded in capturing the thoughts and inner moments of his
listeners while their minds wander into memory, imagination, & aspiration.
He continues to write when the muse inspires,
as those who already know his music ask for more.
Russ composes for story and film, for occasion, & for
the pure joy and contentment it brings.
A musician in every sense of the word, he awakes with a dreamsong
echoing in his ear, hears a symphony in the wind, and marvels at the
possibility of filing his days with the process and challenge of being a
full time musician. Pause for a moment, as so many others have, and
let your mind soar to a far away place of wonder, sweet memory, or
discovery as you listen...
My goal, like so many others, is to have the freedom in this life to spend my time writing and sharing music. It is the language we speak, when words can't be found. It is our core, our connection...

June 2008
Studio is up and running... and I'm toying with the idea of opening its doors to local musicians who wish to work on their own material, in addition to continued work on my latest ideas.
May 2008
Cecily is 7 months old! Spring is here, Angie's sneezing, and my studio is in reconstruct mode. We moved 6 weeks ago and won't be moving again for at least a few years. We've finally managed to provide the studio a truly excellent space thanks to this last move. I have a strange excitement about establishing my studio this time... Something I haven't felt since my teenage years.
I have about a half dozen songs that have been brewing over the last year and will begin production on them in just a couple weeks. It's time.

In Memory of Rue
We lost our cherished Rue today. Words cannot be found and the pain is too great to even sit at my piano.
Goals for 2008 -
It's new year resolution time again... this year I think we're going to resolve to stop just hoping music will someday become my career and see about bringing that dream into reality. Not sure how, but with the arrival of my daughter among other things, I want more now than ever to spend my days writing and producing music, traveling with her and my wife sharing my music, and just being there as she grows.

How, do you think, does the internet (or mp3) change the music industry?
Hopefully by taking an artist's music, currently trapped in a single region, to an internationally appreciated work of expression.
Would you sign a record contract with a major label?
Perhaps.. It would really depend on a lot of things.. I just compose. I work alone and with other musicians and artists.
I don't really care how it happens, I just want to have the ability to spend my days writing and sharing the music that never ceases in my head..

Band History:
I remember my first composition, entitled "Christmas Tree", composed at a whole 4 years old. I can still play it - it's quite terrible, though I suppose mom liked it.
In jr. high, my dad bought me my first keyboard (Proteus)... which opened an entirely new world to me. Then Tangerine Dream happened...followed by Vangelis, Manheim Steamroller and Yanni, Enigma and Enya.
When high school hit, I ditched as often as I could, played in clubs downtown, and started writing and recording. By the time I met my wife, I'd managed to put together a decent room full of keyboards and a Mac SE-30 for sequencing (funny, huh). I took her to my studio for our first date. We ended up playing music together for hours.Thirty days later, I proposed to her.. in my studio. That was more than ten years ago now.

Your influences?
Predominantly, Michael W Smith - But I find the music of Bach, Joplin, Vangelis, Vaughn, Elfman, Shore, E.S. Posthumus, Ackerman and others very satisfying.
I find it difficult to select a category or genre for my music. People usually comment that most of my work sounds like it belongs in a movie or tells a story, but other than that, it's just music that sits in my head until I get it out..

Favorite spot?
Anywhere that I'm flying over -
I grew up in Kansas, and aside from chasing tornadoes, learning to fly is about the only other thing a kid with a father's who's an engineer has to do in the lovely Sunflower State!

Great stuff man, although the same four chords are repeated, the track stays interesting, that is not easy to do, nice job. Very atmospheric indeed.

Another beauty here Russ, I can see why you're so proud of your dad, he's an incredible guitar talent, love the style, so melodic and passionate, the feeling comes across loud and clear and sweet at the same time. I'll have to explore your page fully when I clear some more time, cause there's a lot more here to explore, if the top two songs are any indication, then there's definitely a lot of treasures on your page.
