Born and raised in Lake Charles, La, The Referenz turned his interest for poetry into a passion for self expression and musical enlightenment at the young age of 13 when he first explored the rhymes and beats that fueled the rap and hip hop art form. By the age of 15 he was producing instrumental tracks on Sound Click, hitting the number one spot within a year.
Through experimentation and paying close attention to what hip hop had to offer, The Referenz learned all he could about the music that would ultimately define him as an artist. He studied guitar, keyboards and even took a few piano lessons from a lady who led a local church just to have a more complete understanding of the world that meant so much to him. Over the years, he has branched out and adapted all genres of music into his special unique brand of hip hop. In his tracks you can hear the blend of west and east coast sounds as well as his special take on the southern beats bred into him as a child.
While listening to a sample of this lengthy catalogue you can come away with an appreciation for not only pure hip hop, but trance, minimal, and other various forms of electronic music. Tha Referenz has performed at beat battles in Lafayette, Shreveport and New Orleans and recently has moved his shop to Atlanta to further explore and share his work. He is always looking for new and better ways to take his passion to the public and is hoping to find in the Atlanta area similar opportunities as he did while in Louisiana, such as his 2009 appearance at Lake Charles radio station 107.5’s Spring Bling.
What started out as a love of hip hop, the music inspired him to dig into his father’s vinyl collection to use as a "reference" to sample songs to create quality instrumentals which has turned into a spiritual journey as well as his life’s work. Tha Referenz sees music as more of a religion than a past time, as can be heard in his sampling of classic songs from decades ago into a lively, powerful and current hip hop track for today.Have you performed in front of an audience?Atlanta
