2nd INTERVIEW!!
"Interview with the God father of Hard Trance himself...
How and when did you get into DJ'ing?
I've been Dj'ing for 18 years now.
You've played at some of the best venues worldwide but which one stood out the most for ya?
WEMF in Canada
Following on from the last question, who has been your favourite promoter to work for and who throws the best parties?
For me its Stuart Walker from Dizstruxshon, Then again I do help him run his night!
UK44 was, and probably still is, the UK's best Hard Trance label. Why did it disappear when Trance was becoming more popular and are there any plans to resurrect the label?
Unfortunately my distributor felt it right not to give me any profits from its success. We sold over 10,000 records, and didn't see a penny. I wasn't prepared to take my artist through it again so I let them go and do there own stuff, and set up Warning records which only lasted 3 releases as the distributor went bust.
I now help Marcus Keas @ everlasting records in Germany with Fate & Rewire. When I am confident enough I'll star another label up.
You are seen by many as the godfather of Hard Trance in the UK and although you have played for all of the major underground promoters you have been overlooked by the big trance clubs such as Gatecrasher and Gods kitchen. Does this bother you, and if you were given the chance would you play for them?
I've been asked recently to play for Gods Kitchen, but I'm in two minds. I think Big Super Clubs over commercialise the scene. And eventually kill it… My Scene is healthy, I like to keep it that way!
What are your views on the present Hard Trance 'sound'. Hard Trance seemed to slow down from around 155-165 bpm to around 150 bpm almost overnight in 98, why do you think this was?..
1: When the credibility of the music is at risk, it changed styles.1998 was Club Trance as Hard Trance producers lost faith in the scene, because it doesn't want to become a victim of its own success.
2: UK producers tried to copy the sound, but really struggled to get it right, they over produce. Or produce fluffy vocal shit.
3: Bad influences, UK bookings for German producers to play @ Gate Crasher, etc (They hear UK Dj's play fluff and that's what they thought we liked!) So they compromised and out came Club Trance.
Many Underground labels such as Overdose and Tracid Traxx are now massive mainstream labels and every Judge Jules wannabe is playing them. Do you therefore think there is still an 'Underground' Hard Trance scene and if so how can the Underground distance itself from the mainstream circuit.
Don't really play them labels now, that was 1 or 2 years ago… Aren't they slow???? We've already moved to a new sound …. We are underground…
With most other big name Hard Trance DJ's concentrating on other styles i.e. Mark EG - Techno, Vortex - Tech-Trance, Sharkey + Energy - Freeform, that leaves yourself and Cally + Juice as the only main 'Big name' DJ'S flying the flag for the Hard Trance sound, do you think it's time for some new blood to be introduced into the scene?
Very strange question…. Why the Categories??
Mark EG - Techno, No, When he plays at events in the UK he plays London Techno & Techno Trance.
Vortex - Tech-Trance, Hard Trance
Sharkey + Energy - Freeform, UK Hard Trance would not get played in Germany.
Cally + Juice, Commercial Hard Trance - A Compromise.
All these fall under the banner of Hard Trance in some way. My music is for open minded people who love to party, isn't that what it's all about ? There is always room for more DJ's here …. But make your own style….
Finally, what is you're all time favourite tune, label and producer?
Not telling you…. This time I'm not giving it away, for someone to make a mess of it!

M-Zone started his career late in 1991 at the now legendary Doncaster Warehouse. He steadily built in reputation and skill, qyuickly becoming known for his upfront style. Originally playing Italian Piano-House, M-Zone began playing Trance and hard house a few years later, and was soon well known as a figure of some influence within the UK (And qite possibly the European) Hard Trance and Hard House scene. Indeed, as he became established as the main resident (And unofficial manager to some extent) of Doncaster Warehouse, he began to book the DJ's that were making the records he played, the big names of European Hard Trance. The years 1994 and 1995 were big years for M-Zone, not only did he begin Residencies at Dizstruxshon and Uprising (Two of the Norths biggest raves), he also introduced the UK to Bonzai Records, by booking they're first UK Live performance at the Warehouse, and later bringing Up and Coming German Hard Trance DJ Timo Maas to play in the UK for the first time at the warehouse.
Toward the end of 1995, he also founded his UK44 Records collective (Which included labels UK44, Forever Forward, Teach Yourself Techno and DW Records). The first releases on each label were immediate hits and UK44, Forever Forward and Teach Yourself Techno became important labels in the UK Hard Trance scene for the next couple of years.
It was t this time that M-Zone was becoming the DJ he is today, playing accross the UK, Europe and Canada, spreading his style accross our planet, each time returning with something new, and more importantly Different. Since then, The UK44 record label has ceased to exist, the warehouse closed and M-Zone has launchjed a new project, Warning Records. He continues to be one of the foremost DJ's in the Hard Trance circuit and has been responsible for progressing the scene to the extent its at today, always seeming to stay one step ahead of todays commercial scene. Whatever may happen in the future, M-Zone will no doubt remain a name to watch.....

M-Zone is one of the biggest heroes of the scene but manages to remain underground. Every time i've had the pleasure to bump into him at raves or record shops he's always been very friendly too!! Am proud to say i'm from the same beautiful town as this guy - Doncaster.
Long Live M-Zone!!
Volumizer - 22-Jun-05 04:55 PM
M-Zone has to be the most influential underground hard trance DJ of the nineties.... and seen as "hard trance" only came about in the nineties - people are right to refer to him as "the godfather of hard trance" it was M-Zones banging, uplifting + uptempo beats that caught Mark EG's ear in the mid nineties and made Mark EG become one of the most recognised hard trance DJ's around the world. Now they have both played all over the world and have many followers and im sure always will..... M-Zones music will live forever ........

Anything else...?

A pioneer in the truest sense of the word, Doncaster based DJ M Zone has been consistently pushing the underground sounds of trance and techno in the UK for nearly 10 years now. Despite his relatively unknown profile M Zone, real name Mick, has had well over 100 underground releases on labels as influential as Tinrib, Bonzai and his own, now defunct, imprint UK44. Since his breakthrough gig at Doncaster Warehouse way back in 1991 he has gone onto to play in scenes such as Germany, Italy, Australia, and Japan gaining support over the years from the insane Mark EG, Carl Cox and the legendary Tony De Vit. Add to this the fact that he was the first person to bring a certain Timo Mass to play in the UK, following their successful collaboration "The Friendship EP", and you have one of the most comprehensive contributions to the underground trance scene of any UK DJ.
While the Mass appeal may have spread to coffee tables and concert halls alike M Zone has continued to pursue and progress the underground scene that he has always loved. "Basically my sets are based on underground, pumping and exciting music" explains M Zone. Excitedly, he continues describing the feelings that have inspired him to dedicate nearly a third of his life to the cause, "I believe deeply that the scene I am involved should always be on the move".
While words like this can roll so cynically off the clichéd tongue of many big name DJs it's hard not to take M Zone seriously, after all this is a DJ who even today spends much of his time seeking out those all important and elusive groundbreaking tracks. "I still buy at least 90% of my tunes, you can't just rely on what mailing lists you're on, you have to search out your own style" is an ethos that has seen M Zone celebrated as a DJ who knows what his crowd wants even before they do.
Despite all this hard work many of the bigger trance clubs have chosen to overlook M Zone's talents in favour of the ready packaged genre hopping celebrity DJs who circulate the mainstream scene. Never one to turn downa party, he would still be excited by the prospect of playing the Gatecrashers of this world saying "I would like to play some of the bigger parties just
to see what sort of reaction I would get." And what exactly does M Zone make of the superstar DJs who seem to consider trance the "next big thing" one moment and a dirty word the next? "I'm not sure how they do it but commercial DJs always seem to be one step behind musically. It seems that us underground DJs do all the experimenting and route making and they take all the glory."
Slightly disheartened perhaps but never bitter, M Zone knows the only way to change peoples perceptions is to make things happen and that's exactly what he intends to do. "I always try to keep the scene alive and play an active part" he pledges with passion. Past actions offer much proof for these words and there appears to be no signs of any change in the future. Despite the untimely death of his long running trance outlet UK44 records ("All my labels profits have been absorbed as if by magic what more can I say?"), the wake has seen M Zone implement plans for a new and exciting label, titled Warning Records.
Focusing on good quality underground trance Warning will feature artists from Canada and Germany as well as M Zone's own production work. Indeed with the over 10 years of experience behind him M Zone is understandably confident when talking about the label. "Warning is an accumulation of all the things I've done and learnt from my previous labels. As soon as we get
the distribution sorted I'm sure people will be noticing some really exciting music from Warning."
As an artist constantly searching to push the scene forward who is it that he turns to for inspiration? "German DJs because of their deep understanding of trance and techno and Italian producers because they know how to make
music that makes people move."
With this explosive combination of experience, enthusiasm and inspiration big things are expected from M Zone and Warning Records as he desperately searches to get the recognition he deserves, without compromising his
musical integrity and if God really is a DJ (and an underground trance one at that) he'll definitely get it.
