Odd Zero – s/t / independent release
Odd Zero's bombastic rock n roll is a welcome sound far from the uninspired emo/poppunk/radio rock popular everywhere these days. With help from the renowned HC punk producer/luminary Don Fury, OZ jams the hard rock /metal grooves, soaring lead solos, punk rock energy and melodic, anthemic vocals to stand out from the modern rock masses on their debut CD. They have an original sound that's infectious and just grows on you each listen. These dudes seamlessly fuse all of these together for a sonic brew makes them uniquely Odd Zero and hard to pigeonhole. Joey Z of Life of Agony produced their new CD, and the 2 new songs up on their myspace sounds even more kick ass good times.
Like Quicksand jamming with The Ramones - but with a hardrock twist. It's slicker sounding, with heavy money riffs, much smoother songwriting and in your face sneering vocals. RI / www. oddzero. net

Odd Zero - Self-Titled Album Review

By Michael Meade

There are two ways to look at Odd Zero, their sound either metal tainted punk or punk tainted metal... whichever way you cut it though, Odd Zero is pretty damn good. There's more than a little Black Flag to their pacing and arrangements on some tracks but it's fully forgivable. Odd Zero has solid beats, solid guitars, a heavy bass, hard and fast vocals, and party lyrics with some depth. This is ending up a short review but these guys are turning into a new favorite of mine. Dig "Libido Suicide", "Sleep Deprived", "The Likes of You", and "Karma Boomerang". Unfortunately only "Libido Suicide" is still on their myspace out my favorites, give "Dirty Electricity" a listen while at their myspace though; good song. Definately a band I recommend checking out, Odd Zero gets a full five out of five! Odd Zero is a four man punk/metal band out of New York City featuring Mike Friedman on vocals, Tay Malloy on bass, Milton Hernandez on drums, and Mike Fujii on guitars. The most British sounding American band I've ever heard, Odd Zero play an upbeat brand of metalised new wave punk (but not in a Sum 41 way!), with plenty of Ramones influenced riffs, the odd rock n roll widdle here and there and a song about wanking. With a hardcore edge, Odd Zero sound like the Vaselines being battered by Black Flag, and have produced a CD of 10 equally good songs that could all stand up to close scrutiny. And with choruses big enough to kill an overweight elephant, play this album a couple of times and it wont be long before you're waking up in the middle of the night screaming one of their infectious melodies. Fans of the early 80's hardcore & new wave scenes would be well advised to check out Odd Zero, but for the purists out there looking for the next '77 copycat band then this is probably a bit too diluted in metal and pop tunes for your liking. Special note should go to the recording as well, which is is a nice balance between the raw / live sound that you really need for this kind of record, but with a sheen and polish to it that stops it from sounding like it was recorded in a garage. Overall? This is kick ass punk-metal to smash your room up to.
