Puerto Rican singer and songwriter Melissa Otero has made waves in the music scene with her captivating lyrics and haunting voice. Since the age of 5, Melissa has been working towards her career as a professional recording artist studying everything from Bach, Mozart and Beethoven to the likes of contemporary artists such as Tori Amos, Sarah McLachlan and Elton John. Combining both Classical and Contemporary styles, Melissa engages her audience with her unique sound and very personal experiences. As Melissa describes, her goal is to ler her audience know that they are "not alone".
With her upcoming debut album "My Spirit", Melissa sings about her hardships during depression which ultimately lead her to Christianity. Her songs such as "10:40pm" and "Free" were both written during the time of her depression and while reading the Holy Bible she read a scripture that speaks of the "sword of the spirit which is the word of God". It was then that Melissa decided to call her album "My Spirit" for she believes her depression was not punishment but more of a learning experience and all of her songs written during that time were thanks to God and became part of her mission. With that said, "My Spirit" was Melissa's way of saying God gave her the words but she is only sharing it with the world to let everyone know that they are not alone and that she too has felt the same pain they have or are experiencing at the time.
