Hi, I am Ken Rich.
Why this name?
I don't have a band so I just use my own name. I try to provide enough backing music to sound like a whole band but it's just me doing multi-track recording to layer in parts. "Songs from a Sinner" was a deliberate choice on my part. I was no "choir boy" in my past life so I thought - this should do away with any perceived pretense.
Do you play live?
I don't often play live. Mostly because I don't have the equipment. I am set up for recording in a home studio environment. I am a lone artist that becomes a whole band by layering in pieces one at a time. When I go live, I need back-up or am reduced to my guitar and voice.
How, do you think, does the internet (or mp3) change the music industry?
For the better. People have more freedom to record what they want - not what sells. I think it's unleashing the creativity of people who otherwise would not have an audience for their songs.
Would you sign a record contract with a major label?
There would have to be some pretty flexible terms but it might end up being more effective. This is a Ministry to me, not some type of self indulgence. I present a Christian message and hopefully money is generated to feed starving kids through the Christian Children's Fund of Canada. So far I have influenced many minds, gotten lot's of great comments, but haven't fed many children. Perhaps a label could make that happen, who knows?
Band History:
I have been writing songs since I was a teenager. Not as a professional, just because I had to in order to express what I was feeling. I always wanted to record them and made a few attempts with cheap equipment. It didn't work well so they sat around collecting dust, some of them for 15-20 years. Now I have discovered modern computer technology makes the dream of an affordable home studio possible. The first song I recorded with this new gear "The Lord is Come" has been successful beyond my wildest dreams. I made a music video out of it and it went #1 on the top 5 list on tagworld for about 3 weeks. I still can't believe it and am trying to make time to record the rest on my new equipment. It's a great feeling when people are moved or inspired by something you created.
Your influences?
I have my own style which some have said reminds them of Pink Floyd, Alan Parsons, Dire Straits and Gordon Lightfoot at times. It all depends on the message of the song and the mood I am trying to create to match the lyrics.
Favorite spot?
Humber Valley, Newfoundland because of the scenery.
Equipment used:
I have a Yamaha keyboard, Samick acoustic and Ibenez electric guitar. I record through a Soundblaster Audigy Platinum EX on Cubase software. I edit in Adobe Audition.
Anything else...?
There is only one "rock" worth rocking for.
