Kate Blundell
Melancholy, reflective, stripped down songs. I write songs about poignant events, which have really affected me in some way or another. I can’t stand listening to a tune which has no meaning, no feeling, it’s useless to me – what’s the point in having a voice, no matter how small, if you can’t use it – even if all you do is allow someone else to identify with an emotion or a moment. I love to listen to songs and think to myself “hey .. maybe I’m not the only person in the world who has felt like this” and that is comforting somehow. My greatest aspiration is that someone will let me know that I have done that for them...
Why this name?
well.. it's my name so there you go!
Do you play live?
I have hosted various acoustic nights in and around Liverpool in the past. Some of these nights I'd still regard as the high points in my life so far!! Played some amazing gigs in the Zanzibar at nights promoted by my friend Joe Keelan. Organising the Music With a View festival in Coniston (The Lakes) used to be the highlight of my year and playing there was always special for me because I'm surrounded by friuends and family. I'd play every moment of every day.. if I could.. but I'd probably lose my voice!
How, do you think, does the internet (or mp3) change the music industry?
The internet has made a massive change to the industry just in terms of accessibility to music and obviously the recent advent of iPod and downloads is huge. I'd hate to see the musicians losing out though because at the end of the day.. some people have to make a living out of playing and we shouldn't detract from what an achievement that is by downloading their stuff and not allowing them to reap any benefit at all from it.
I'm still somewhat in awe of the fact that people from all over the world can access my music - it was fantastic enough to record something which allowed me to show people what I could do - the whole soundclick community has amazed me with their support !

Would you sign a record contract with a major label?
Damn right.. but what are the chances of that happening? I've been living the Coyote Ugly dream for sooo long now and I've never seen or heard of an A&R man at any open mic I've been to in Liverpool ! Surprising really given the amount of bands that have popped up from merseyside recently ! I guess you have to dream though...
Band History:
Written songs since I was 17.. the first bieng "Not the way it should be" which I recorded at "The Hottie" in Manchester July 2002 along with 5 other tracks which make up the EP "Silver Shores".. "Fingerprints" is the last EP I produced (along with my good friend Lyndon Coleman) in 2004. Since leaving the world of studenthood..where I was able to do lots of gigs in the week.. I've found balancing work and music somewhat of a challenge and I'm currently taking a break from gigging to concentrate on my work commitments.. which is a bit sad really !!
Your influences?
I was named after Simon and Garfunkel songs (Katherine[Kathy] Emily - my full name) hence I was brought up listening to Joni Mitchell, Bob Dylan, Linda Rondstadt.. My Mum and Dad obviously had a huge influence on my musical tastes and they both supported me when I wanted to learn various instruments as a child.. My Mum always tells me that they bought me a xylophone when I was really young and she made sure it was in tune so that I could make proper music.. I guess that must've been the start of something..
I had once thought that the time when a girl could sit on a stage with only her guitar was over on the 70's.. it was when I first heard Jewel Kiltcher singing "you were meant for me" that I realised that this would always be a possibility..
There is a certain vulnerability to that kind of performance.. the fact that it *is* damn scary.. especially on a circuit which is so male dominated for a girl to have the balls to get up there and sing her heart out about something she believes in, something she feels...That's me.

Favorite spot?
The beach at Blundellsands - I grew up in Coniston, the Lake District .. the village is distinctively beautiful, but always overshadowed by mountains - so for most of my life I've missed out on sunsets. I guess that's why I love Crosby beach because in summer - there's nearly always a sunset to watch and every one is different !
Equipment used:
Acoustic guitar (I've just bought a Guild Songbird), with a little cello or electric piano, but only in small helpings and for recording purposes only so far!
Anything else...?
I am lucky enough to work with some fantastic people - firstly Lyndon Coleman (see Project Aurora on the links page) he's basically my personal producer - I trust him implicitly. He’s more fussy about stuff than me and never afraid to tell me when I need to do something again.. and again.. but hey it's worth it to get it right!
Frank Holden – we’ve played some fantastic music together just recently – Frank has basically written piano parts to most of my songs from scratch – I listen to his unique brand of “improvised-jazz” and wonder why I ever thought I needed guitar accompaniment. Beautiful ..
Alastair Ligertwood – again he’s composed his own cello parts to some of my songs – his input just makes the music a little more whole by adding a subtle bass element.
