play lo-fi play hi-fi  Mountains of Mourne
I am a singer songwriter. I perform my own songs, traditional (usually English folk) and covers as appropriate. I usually perform solo at the moment though I have some ideas to link up with some other musicians in the near future. I was a member of a band called The Units and we did quite a few gigs around the Bury area, North of the UK, before we split a few years ago.
Why this name?
My surname means 'homestead by the pond' or town by the pool. No idea why mum and dad chose John!
Do you play live?
I play at Gregson Lane Folk club regularly and, on the Thursday evenings the folk club is not on I run an open mic night at 'The Black Horse' pub on Gregson Lane.
How, do you think, does the internet (or mp3) change the music industry?
The process of change is going full swing right now and outcome is still not clear where it will all end. It is definitely a democratisation which has to be good for the majority of musicians and listeners.
Would you sign a record contract with a major label?
In my dreams! Actually I reckon it takes a couple of years to write an album's worth of good material.
Your influences?
Think mature themes for the songs. I think my music is influenced by the formal structure of a lot of traditional song. My usual guitar style is finger picking, I do employ open tunings and finger styles similar to Nic Jones and Martin Carthy. I like songwriters like James Taylor and Damien Rice.
Favorite spot?
Rome, Las vegas, Tuscany, Grand Canyon, Monterey, Brittany, Zion National Park, Positano, I like travel.
