Why this name?
there really isnt any story other than it felt right.
Do you play live?
i have played live at various venues and broadcast online. there are very few things i enjoy more than the feeling of generating a positive feeling for people listening to my work. my favorite moments would include when people approach me and tell me how much they have enjoyed my work. it makes everything worthwhile.
How, do you think, does the internet (or mp3) change the music industry?
i think the internet is a catalyst that enhances the power of music, particularly the genres in which i work. i believe when it is used as a tool for promotion, the potential has no end. i think it could bring about a positive change to the music industry if the music industry doesnt try to squash it first, but people tend to fear and dislike things they dont understand. the internet is not a bad thing. i support file sharing; its a great way to bring exposure to an artist. no matter how famous an artists becomes, a little extra exposure never hurts.
Would you sign a record contract with a major label?
i cannot decide if i would sign with a major label. i think major labels have had more positive results for artists in the past than they do currently. i would be cautious about signing on with one.
Band History:
it is difficult to pinpoint a starting point. i have always been passionate about music, playing various instruments, compiling tracks for friends and school functions. i guess i started using djsquelch around 1994 and phase shifts around 2004, however i know i have dj'ed and produced long before choosing either name. prior to these names, i had not gone by any stage/pen name.
Your influences?
electronic dance music is my heart and soul. i find i am influenced by the following: ambient, downtempo, lounge, idm, acid, minimal, trance, house, jungle, dnb, hardcore, happy hardcore, gabber, industrial, avantgarde, experimental, acid jazz, dub, reggae, turntablism, jazz, disco, rock, spoken word, and sound i hear- whether its from a movie, tv, game, outside... everything i hear influences me.
Favorite spot?
i love the isolation of the country, but i also love the cold confinement of the city- both are equally inviting leaving me to feel at home in either place. im not really much for the suburbs, though.
Equipment used:
mac and pc, a host of software, several instruments, and various dj equipment. hey, a cook doesnt reveal his recipe! ;)
Anything else...?
aside from mixing, remixing, and production, i occasionally like to collaborate on projects with others. other than that, i love making friends and acquaintances.
