My philosophy on music:

Music should take you to another place. It should evoke emotions, bring back long-forgotten memories, and conjure up vivid mental images.

A good song will stand on its own, lyrics or not, and tell a story. It may be a different story to different people, but I think that's what makes the medium so unique and powerful.
