Dan Solomon -- Man of Action! is a spoken word performer based out of Austin TX. A veteran of the South Texas scene, Dan was the host of the No Alarms Spoken Word Jam in McAllen TX for several months in 2000 and a regular presence at the Puro Slam in San Antonio in 2001 and 2002. He has toured the midwest and east coast at rock and hardcore venues, regularly winning over music audiences with his words. He has three records, Speedism, Eric Clapton, and Live At Emo's Alternative, and nearly a half-dozen chapbooks. His first novel, Quiddity, was published in 2002.
Why this name?
I went with "Man of Action!" because it's a battle cry for myself. You become what you present to the world; I'd rather set myself up as a person who gets things done.
Do you play live?
I've played all over Texas, the east coast, and the midwest. For poets, I've performed with Talaam Acey, Shannon McGarvey, and the legendary Mark Smith, as well as countless others. I try to focus primarily on club dates and rock venues now. I've played Emo's and Stubb's BBQ in Austin, Fat Cat's in Houston, The Dixie Taverne in New Orleans, Blank Generation in Little Rock, Saratoga Winners in Albany, and dozens of show spaces in other parts of the country.
How, do you think, does the internet (or mp3) change the music industry?
The goal is distribution, especially for a spoken word performer, not sales. The record costs no money to make since they're live tracks. The Internet allows a person to cast a wide net to give people a taste of what to expect from the show.
Your influences?
Henry Rollins, Jello Biafra, Bill Hicks, Saul Williams, Gil Scott Heron, George Carlin, Charles Bukowski, Allen Ginsberg
Favorite spot?
Austin TX or Chicago IL.
