Crystal Image Productions was formed by John and Patty Covert in 1968 along with Crystal Image Music BMI and Crystal Image Demos.

John has opened for, or performed with, Tower of Power (Radisson Hotel, 12th annual "bump city" dance party, outdoor grove, Sacramento 2001), The Sons of Champlin (Bill Champlin of Chicago), Lady Bo (Peggy Malone, Bo Diddley's protege guitarist), The Chiffons, Chad & Jeremy, Simon & Garfunkel, Gary U.S. Bonds, Ron Thompson, members of Albert King's and John Lee Hooker's blues bands, Allen Frank & the leather souls, Wingnut Adams, Harlee and the Sugar Daddies, Melonnee Desiree, Stonehouse, Zaidee Cole, Cooley Jackson, Studebaker blues band, Mama Z, Rita Thomas, Bam!!, and many others. He has shared the stage with musicians that have performed with Pam Tillis, Sly and the Family Stone, B B King, The Coasters, Bobby Blue Bland, Tommy Castro, Canned Heat and Smashmouth. John recently performed at the Stockton Asparagus Festival (the event draws close to 100,000 people). New York agent, Pump Audio is handling some of John's song catalogue. His song, "Nag on me", was featured on the VH1 TV show "Driven", August 8, 2004. Also featured was grammy award winner, Usher. The same song was recently featured on an episode of the Sopranos on A&E network.

John plays blues, old school R&B, country, oldies and classic rock.

He does full band songwriter demos (**email crystali@volcano.net for info or check out the demo web site below his photo and name on the lower left side of this web site = "official web page"), "original song" karaoke soundtracks, album projects for songwriters, publishers and producers internationally.

John co-produced, with Merri-Webb Productions, California Gold's first national single release (California Gold opened for Sawyer Brown and appeared on the Grand Ole Opry). He often cowrites on songs, and with writers, he feels have commerical potential. John has cowritten songs with Horace Linsley (Horace wrote songs recorded by Paul McCartney and Wings, Don Mclean, Mel Torme and Buddy Holly), recorded songwriting demos for Jimmie Crane (Jimmie wrote the big hit, "Hurt", recorded by Elvis and Timi Yuro), and been featured vocally on an album produced by Jimmy DeKnight (aka James E. Myers, composer of "Rock around the clock"!). In the '80's he wrote songs for a project produced by Dude Mclean, who was then working for MCA publishing in Los Angeles. He also has published instructional books and cd's on songwriting, guitar, piano, bass and drums, that have been marketed nationally.

John has had over 27 singles and several albums released nationally and internationally. His songs have been featured on ABC TV's "General Hospital", The Nashville Network (TNN), VH1 TV show "The fabulous life of country superstars", Viacom International, in Hollywood movies, Billboard magazine, Country Song Roundup magazine and U.S. Gospel News. He was a Grand prize winner in the Nashville Music City Song Festival, a finalist in the American Song Festival, a finalist in the National country music songwriting contest sponsored by Kentucky Fried Chicken and hosted by country music legend, Johnny Lee. One of Covert's songs is published by Universal Music Group (Rondor Music), whose catalogue also includes the works of the Beachboys, Al Green, Otis Redding, Tom Petty and many others.

He cowrote the #1 single "Smile if you love Jesus" on the 1999 country gospel music guild charts with songwriter Rick Wingerter. Recorded by W.C Taylor, Jr. He also co-wrote "One heart at a time" with grand prize Nashville music city song festival lyric winner, Ann Leisten, recorded by Steve Jordan on Edgar Brincat's Roll on Records label, mastered at Capitol Records. Two comedy songs, "Lucy has been drafted" and "Don't eat that!", cowritten with producer Richard Berberian were aired on Dr. Demento's nationally syndicated show.

Many of his singles have become collector's items. The 1986 Roll on Records vinyl 45 rpm release of "Sara Claus" and "I'll take country music anytime" was offered on MusicStack.com, from a collector, for $30. John has had other offers from labels and collectors for $100 each for a mint '45' rpm vinyl recording of his '60's cult classics, "They" and "Nag on me".

Several of his early efforts have been featured on "California love-in", a collectors edition cd out of the United Kingdom/Ireland which also features some of the early works of Steppenwolf. John Covert and Crystal Image can be heard on Dream Records and other labels in the USA, Canada and on a Crystal Image CD, "Rock and Roll", (from a 1973 Dream Records vinyl LP) re-released on Red Lounge Records, Germany..(http://www.redloungerecords.de/crystalimage). These European re-releases were sessions originally engineered by Allen Friensehner in the '70's here in the states.

Why this name?
The name Crystal Image was chosen because our band is "family oriented". We have a clean cut show. Michael Samaritano (guitar/vocal) is an ex movie stunt man who adds his crazy antics to each performance, Dayna wills, related to legendary Bob Wills, is a new addition to Crystal Image Trio and contributes beautiful, yet powerful, female vocals. Performing classic rock, blues, country oldies and originals, with a list of over 300 songs..there's something for everone!
Do you play live?
I love performing live. I feel very blessed to still be doing so. In 2001, after a show with Tower of Power, a bone chip broke off and crushed my L3 nerve leaving me permanantly partially paralyzed on my lower left side. Armed with a strong faith, after spinal surgery, loving care from a wonderful wife and beautiful loyal friends, I began performing, recording and teaching again. We currently perform all over California and Nevada. I pray my songwriting reflects the blessings I've had in life and touches hearts.
Would you sign a record contract with a major label?
I feel major labels today are more distributors.. after an act or band has a solid, devoted fan base and drawing power. I think it's more about, having an exciting show, a good agent, marketing, connections and hard work! The Indies, the agent and the act have to work as a promotion team. I compare it (tongue in cheek) to campaigning for president.. I have relatives that are on a major label and their band makes $100 a nite plus a percentage of the door. They live out of their vans on the road. I admire their youth, energy and devotion to their music. I remember those "dues-paying" days all too well.
I measure success as "being married to a wonderful girl for 37 years, surviving spinal surgery, and my youthful stupidity when many others, I've loved, respected and performed with during my musical career, have passed on. Knowing God, my place in His plan, the reason for being here.. doing my best to walk a decent path and leave behind some honorable, helpful and loving footprints like my parents did."

Your influences?
I love everything from Hag to B B king and beyond.
I "cut my teeth" on James Brown, Ricky Nelson, Simon & Garfunkel (Tom & Jerry), Ray Charles, Creedence Clearwater (the Golliwogs), the Doobies and CSN&Y (although I love CPR even more)..
One night I'll be doing a soft acoustic show with the duo or trio.. the next night may call for a "power" band performing classic rock, country, oldies or originals. Keyboards with a B3 module or sampled rhodes chorus electric piano with a split left handed precision bass. Whatever the gig, audience and venue calls for.. it keeps me young..it's all fun!
Favorite spot?
Penticton Canada, pine Grove and Jackson California
Equipment used:
Live: PSR 540 yamaha keys and hammond B3 effects.. studio: fender guitars or modified copies. I use Digital Orchestrator Plus Pro for my own personal studio. I prefer pro tools and a vintage hammond B3 when I record or produce in an outside studio.
Anything else...?
