Short-wave radio, piano, and really good lyrics--The Dan Emery Mystery Band is top 10 in Singapore with their first CD, which was financed by 119 of their fans. Newspapers and magazines have compared this New York City band to Moxy Fruvous, Elliot Smith, Red Dark Sweet and the Velvet Underground--but in vain, 'cause they are just they.
Why this name?
I used to host a jam session that was advertised in the newspapers as "Dan Emery and Mystery Guests". After a while the jam session jelled into a permanent band.
Do you play live?
We play live all around the Northeast at colleges and clubs. Playing life is the absolute best thing about music for me. We take the stage and I always say "Tonight we have one mission and one mission only, which is to entertain you to the best of our abilities." Then we go to work. For us the most fun is when people jump up and down and scream our names between songs. Every minute of every show is a special moment.
If you make it big..?
Steve, the piano/electric tennis racket/short-wave radio player, will be able to quit his day job.
Band History:
After we played NYC clubs for about a year, 119 of our local fans financed an album, donating amounts ranging from $2.00 to $273.00. They're all listed in the liner note under "Executive Producer". The french kissing chimpanzees on the front cover were photographed by a famous ape expert.

Since then about 25 radio stations have played us, we've gotten some great reviews, and we've been able to start playing around the region.

Your influences?
The members of the band come from very different places. Steve, the piano player, loved Biff Rose and the Beach Boys. Chuck, the drummer, listens to Metallica. I like Hank Williams and John Lee Hooker. But we never get compared to any of those artists. Maybe our main influence is actually an idea--the idea that people are basically intriguing apes who like food and sex and who are trying to live good lives.
Favorite spot?
In bed under the right circumstances?
Equipment used:
Steve has a hand-built shortwave radio, a very beat up Wurlitzer electric piano, and a homemade 19 string electric tennis racket. I play any guitar that is handy through any amp that is handy.
Anything else...?
Thank you for taking the time and extreme care and attention to interview me. I'm very honored and touched.
