BULLETPROOF
play lo-fiplay lo-fi     play hi-fiplay hi-fi
This one is a little different for me. It's kind of like a Montgomery Gentry sort of ballad, but I haven't done a drum track for it yet. I'm not sure if I want to to be honest. I wouldn't mind some opinions on that.

About the song
It started with hearing a news story about some poor guy who got killed on his ATV. I heard it on a trip through New Brunswick. I wrote the first verse and the chorus between two stops on that trip.

By the time I started to head back towards home, the song was done. I stopped in Fredericton on the way back and while I was there I ran into a friend of mine, and her two kids. Another kid was with them. He was the son of a friend of the family. The kid's uncle was the ATV driver I'd heard about on the news, and this was the day after the funeral.

It was a horrible coincidence, but the kid seemed to be doing ok. I guess it had had some time to sink in.

Ronnie is a real person, the husband of a friend of mine. Since we have good free health care in this country, some of his story has been fictionalized, but the title of the song came from a conversation I had with his wife. She told me she'd thought he was bulletproof. My response was " He was, until God got a clean shot." She thought that was a great line, and I did too, so there you go.

The rest is made up.
Lyrics
Jamie Morgan broke his neck
On an ATV
They’re pretty sure he’ll walk again
But they’ll have to wait and see
His grandpa was in my chair at a quarter to three
Telling me

Ronnie ate the right foods
And he didn’t drink or smoke
When his doctor called him in
He thought it was a joke
A quadruple bypass later he just about went broke
You never know

I’m so lucky
I know just what I’ve got
I’ve got the kind of life
That I know can’t be bought
If I’ve learned anything
In this old barber shop
We’re only bulletproof
Till God gets a clean shot

I’ve had cheating husbands in here
When they got caught
Teenage boys who tell me
Which girls they think are hot
Then the angry dads come in
And I help those boys to not
Get shot

(Repeat chorus)

(bridge)

There’s no predicting when the end is gonna come
So I try to fill each day with laughter, life and love

(Repeat chorus)
