About the song
This was my answer to a challenge by Grammy-winning artist John Mayer to complete one of his songs. About half the lyrics belong to John, half are mine, and all of the music is mine. In his words, "You can tell people we wrote a song together." But can I write to the same standard as John Mayer? You decide. These were his original lyrics:
I keep a note that I wrote on a taxi receipt
It says, “Don't listen to anybody other than me”
I hit the big time for a nominal fee
You lose a friend in the end for every dream that you see come true
I got scars upon scrapes, I've got bruises on breaks
Masochistically committed to see how much of this I'll take
Three years under water, and I ain't even got the shakes
I'm going deeper and deeper and deeper
I've got dreams to remember, I've got days to forget
I've got some phone calls in to God but he ain't called me back just yet
I keep a note that I wrote on a taxi receipt
It says, “Don't listen to anybody other than me”
I hit the big time for a nominal fee
You lose a friend in the end for every dream that you see come true
I got scars upon scrapes, I've got bruises on breaks
Masochistically committed to see how much of this I'll take
Three years under water, and I ain't even got the shakes
I'm going deeper and deeper and deeper
I've got dreams to remember, I've got days to forget
I've got some phone calls in to God but he ain't called me back just yet
Lyrics
I’m a wanderer…
I keep a note that I wrote on a taxi receipt
“Don’t be listening to anyone just listen to me”
Ascending to the big time for a nominal fee
But in the end you’ll spend a friend for every dream that you see come true
And nobody told me
I got scars upon scrapes, I’ve got bruises on breaks
Masochistic’lly committed now to see what I can take
Three years under water, I ain’t even got the shakes
I’m going deeper and deeper and deeper
I’m a treasure seeker
I’ve got dreams to remember, I’ve got days to forget
Got a phone call in to God but he ain’t called me back just yet
Got a trophy on my mantle in a home I hardly see
I’m a foreigner, a faker, you might find me on TV
Turn it up now…
For the scars upon scrapes, for the bruises on breaks
Presidentially invited to the ball of my mistakes
Three years in a furnace and I haven’t felt a flame
Burning higher and higher and higher
I’m a fire fighter…
I’ve got dreams to remember, some nightmares to forget
Got an email in to God but he ain’t mailed me back just yet
I’ve been mining for the music that can keep our dream alive
Can you find me one more songwriter in two thousand and five?
In the clearing stands a poet of the fibre-optic age
He’s a modern day crusader, he’s the captain of his fate
You will gain a friend for every dream that’s wanting to come true
And I hope I get there…another taxi…fare
And hope is everything…so driver take me…there
And hope’s a precious thing…so strive without a care
I keep a note that I wrote on a taxi receipt…
I keep a note that I wrote on a taxi receipt
“Don’t be listening to anyone just listen to me”
Ascending to the big time for a nominal fee
But in the end you’ll spend a friend for every dream that you see come true
